Compatibility and installation

Dimmable — what does this mean in practice?

This lamp is designed to work with dimmers — you can smoothly adjust the light level between minimum and maximum brightness. Important considerations:

  • An LED-compatible dimmer circuit is required — old halogen dimmers may not work reliably with this lamp
  • Dimming may cause slight flickering or pulsing at low power levels — this is a common phenomenon in LED dimming
  • The minimum power limit is typically around 10–15% — below this, the lamp may turn off completely
  • Check compatibility — Sylvania maintains a list of approved dimmers; contact our customer service if you have doubts

Compatible dimmers can be found in the Electrical Supplies → Dimmers category.

Superia MR16 DIM series — when to choose 4.3W vs 5W vs 6.1W?

Sylvania offers three power options in the Superia MR16 DIM series:

  • This 4.3W DIM (345/380 lm): replaces a 35–40W halogen — soft ambient light, general household lighting, most affordable dimmable Superia MR16
  • 5W DIM (460/480 lm): replaces a 40W halogen — general lighting, ambient lighting
  • 6.1W DIM (621 lm): replaces a 50W halogen — powerful spotlight, retail displays

Measure the power of your old halogen lamp — choose the correct model based on that. If the old lamp was 35W or less, choose this 4.3W model.

Typical applications — dimmable soft light

  • Restaurants and cafes — dimmer ambient lighting for evening gatherings
  • Households — adjustable lighting for living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas
  • Hotels — ambient lighting for rooms and lobbies
  • Home theaters — light level during movies and entertainment
  • Chandeliers and multi-lamp fixtures — the combined power of several 4.3W lamps is sufficient for general lighting

4 color temperature variants — for all applications

  • 2700K (extra warm, incandescent-like): households, restaurants, hotels, vintage luminaires
  • 3000K (warm white): most common for ambient lighting
  • 4000K (natural white): offices, meeting rooms, retail stores
  • 6500K (daylight): museums, gallery staff areas, spaces requiring precise work

MR16 size with 44 mm diameter

This lamp is a compact MR16 version — slightly smaller (44 mm) than standard MR16 (51 mm), but maintains MR16 compatibility with its GU5.3 base. Suitable for both standard MR16 holders and slightly smaller recesses.

Requires a 12V transformer

This is a 12V low voltage lamp that requires a 12V transformer to operate. It works with both magnetic and electronic transformers, but compatibility with electronic transformers depends on the specific model of the transformer. The most common compatible brands are Helvar, Tridonic, Osram, Ledvance, and Vossloh-Schwabe.

Transformer and dimmer — both must be LED-compatible

In a dimmable system, both components must be LED-compatible:

  • Transformer: 12V LED-compatible (magnetic or electronic)
  • Dimmer: LED-compatible — old halogen dimmers may not work

Compatible transformers can be found in Electrical Supplies → Transformers and dimmers in Electrical Supplies → Dimmers category.

Check transformer power

The transformer's power must match the lamp. For one 4.3W lamp, the transformer should be a minimum of approximately 5W (allow a small reserve). For multiple lamps:

  • 5 lamps = 21.5W → transformer at least 25W
  • 10 lamps = 43W → transformer at least 50W
  • 20 lamps = 86W → transformer at least 100W

Glass body — premium quality

The full glass body produces a more even light distribution than plastic, does not yellow over time, and gives a halogen-like appearance — fitting seamlessly into traditional luminaires.

Replaces 35–40W GU5.3 halogen — 88% energy saving

This 4.3W LED produces the same light output (345–380 lm) as a traditional 35–40W GU5.3 halogen. The energy saving is approximately 88%, and the lifespan is:

  • 35–40W GU5.3 halogen: 2,000–4,000 h
  • This Sylvania Superia DIM: 25,000 h — 6–12 times longer

36° beam angle — wide spotlight

Flood-class spotlight, suitable for general lighting, ambient lighting, and accent lighting.

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the luminaire has a GU5.3 base (not GU4 or GU10)
  2. Check that a 12V transformer is in use (magnetic or electronic)
  3. Check that the transformer's power is sufficient for the total power of the lamps
  4. Check that the dimmer is LED-compatible (if in use)
  5. Check that the luminaire dimensions (44 mm diameter, 50 mm length) are suitable
  6. Turn off the power before installation — do not touch the lamp glass with your fingers
  7. Install the lamp and turn on the power
  8. Test the dimming function at different levels — check that the lamp does not flicker disturbingly

What is a dimmable LED and how does it differ from a non-dimmable one?

A dimmable LED is a lamp designed to work with dimmers — you can steplessly adjust the light level. A non-dimmable LED only operates at full power. Important differences:

  • Dimmable: contains a special electronic circuit capable of receiving a dimming signal. This increases manufacturing costs, which is why the price is usually slightly higher.
  • Non-dimmable: only operates at full power. If installed in a luminaire with a dimmer, it may flicker, remain on at full power, or be damaged.

This Sylvania Superia 4.3W DIM is reasonably priced — only €0.21 more expensive than the corresponding non-dimmable 4.3W model (€7.41 vs €7.20). The small price difference makes the dimmable model an attractive choice for future flexibility.

Is 4.3W sufficient to replace a 35–50W halogen?

This bulb produces 345–380 lm of light, which best corresponds to a 35–40W halogen. Sylvania states "replaces 35–50W halogen" in the product information, but in practice:

  • 35W GU5.3 halogen: ~ 300 lm — this bulb produces more light, so it will certainly replace it
  • 40W GU5.3 halogen: ~ 380 lm — this bulb matches exactly
  • 50W GU5.3 halogen: ~ 600 lm — this bulb produces about 60% of that

If your old bulb was 50W and you need the same light output, we recommend the more powerful Superia 6.1W DIM model (621 lm). This 4.3W model is best when a softer ambient light is desired, or when the fixture has multiple bulbs whose combined output is sufficient.

Should I choose 4.3W DIM or 4.3W non-dimmable?

The choice depends on whether you need a dimming function. The price difference is small—only €0.21:

  • 4.3W non-dimmable: €7.20 — operates only at full power, suitable when the fixture does not have a dimmer and one is not planned to be added
  • This 4.3W dimmable: €7.41 — you can adjust the light level, suitable for homes, restaurants, and spaces where flexibility is desired

We recommend the dimmable model because:

  • The price difference is minimal (less than 3% higher)
  • You gain the option for adjustment in the future
  • The bulb also works without a dimmer — it does not force you to use a dimmer

The only reason to choose non-dimmable is if you are 100% sure you will never need dimming.

Does this bulb work with an old halogen dimmer?

Possibly, but reliability is not guaranteed. LED lamps and old halogen dimmers use different technology:

  • Halogen dimmers: designed for high loads (typically 60–500W) — the low load of an LED lamp can cause flickering
  • LED-compatible dimmers: designed for low loads and to work with the electronics of LED lamps

Common problems with old halogen dimmers:

  • Flickering at low levels
  • Not turning off even when the dimmer is at minimum (the lamp remains dimly lit)
  • Jumping/stuttering when transitioning between different levels
  • Annoying auditory frequency

We recommend switching to an LED-compatible dimmer. You can find compatible dimmers in the Electrical Supplies → Dimmers category.
