Compatibility and installation

Dimmable — what does this mean in practice?

This lamp is designed to work with dimmers — you can adjust the light level steplessly between minimum and maximum brightness. Important considerations:

  • An LED-compatible dimmer circuit is required — old halogen dimmers may not work reliably with this lamp
  • Dimming may cause slight flicker or judder at low power levels — this is a common phenomenon in LED dimming
  • The minimum power limit is typically around 10–15% — below this, the lamp may turn off completely
  • Check compatibility — Sylvania maintains a list of approved dimmers, contact our customer service if you have doubts

Compatible dimmers can be found in the Electrical Supplies → Dimmers category.

Typical applications for dimmable lamps

  • Restaurants and hotels — dimmer lighting during evening, brighter during the day
  • Households — ambient lighting for living rooms and bedrooms
  • Meeting rooms — light adjusted during presentations and video conferences
  • Stores and gallery display areas — highlighting different product categories
  • Home theaters and entertainment areas — light level during movies and video games

Superia MR16 DIM series — when to choose 5W vs 6.1W?

Sylvania offers two wattages in the Superia MR16 DIM series:

  • This 5W DIM (460/480 lm): replaces 40W halogen — general lighting, ambient lighting, slightly softer light
  • 6.1W DIM (621 lm): replaces 50W halogen — more powerful spotlight

Measure the wattage of your old halogen lamp — choose the right model based on that. If the old lamp was 35–40W, choose this 5W model.

Dimmable vs non-dimmable — only €0.10 price difference

Sylvania has priced this dimmable model exceptionally close to the non-dimmable version:

Practically, you get dimming capability with almost no extra cost. This is exceptional — the usual price difference for dimmability is +€1–2. We recommend choosing the dimmable model if there's even a chance you'll want to add a dimmer in the future.

4 color temperature variants — for all applications

  • 2700K (extra warm, incandescent-like): households, restaurants, hotels, vintage luminaires
  • 3000K (warm white): most common for ambient lighting
  • 4000K (natural white): offices, meeting rooms, stores
  • 6500K (daylight): museums, gallery staff areas, spaces requiring precise work

MR16 size with 44 mm diameter

This lamp is a compact MR16 version — slightly smaller (44 mm) than standard MR16 (51 mm), but retains MR16 compatibility with its GU5.3 base.

Requires 12V transformer

This is a 12V low-voltage lamp that requires a 12V transformer to operate. Works with both magnetic and electronic transformers, but compatibility with electronic transformers depends on the exact model of the transformer. The most common compatible brands are Helvar, Tridonic, Osram, Ledvance, and Vossloh-Schwabe.

Transformer and dimmer — both must be LED-compatible

In a dimmable system, both components must be LED-compatible:

  • Transformer: 12V LED-compatible (magnetic or electronic)
  • Dimmer: LED-compatible — old halogen dimmers may not work

Compatible transformers can be found in the Electrical Supplies → Transformers category and dimmers in the Electrical Supplies → Dimmers category.

Check transformer power

The transformer's power must match the lamp. For one 5W lamp, the transformer should be at least about 7W (allow a small reserve). For multiple lamps:

  • 5 lamps = 25W → transformer at least 30W
  • 10 lamps = 50W → transformer at least 60W
  • 20 lamps = 100W → transformer at least 120W

Glass body — premium quality

A full glass body produces a more even light distribution than plastic, doesn't yellow over time, and gives a halogen-like appearance — fitting seamlessly into traditional luminaires.

Replaces 40W GU5.3 halogen — 88% energy saving

This 5W LED produces the same light output (460–480 lm) as a traditional 40W GU5.3 halogen. Energy saving is approximately 88%, and the lifespan is 6–12 times longer.

36° beam angle — wide spotlight

Flood-class spotlight, suitable for general lighting, ambient lighting, and accent lighting.

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the luminaire has a GU5.3 base (not GU4 or GU10)
  2. Check that a 12V transformer is used (magnetic or electronic)
  3. Check that the transformer's power is sufficient for the total power of the lamps
  4. Check that the dimmer is LED-compatible (if in use)
  5. Check that the luminaire's dimensions (44 mm diameter, 50 mm length) fit
  6. Turn off power before installation — do not touch the lamp glass with your fingers
  7. Install the lamp in place and turn on the power
  8. Test the dimming function at different levels — check that the lamp does not flicker disturbingly

What is a dimmable LED and how does it differ from a non-dimmable one?

A dimmable LED is a bulb designed to work with dimmers — you can adjust the light level steplessly. A non-dimmable LED only operates at full power. Key differences:

  • Dimmable: contains a special electronic circuit capable of receiving a dimming signal. This increases manufacturing costs and therefore the price is usually slightly higher.
  • Non-dimmable: operates only at full power. If installed in a fixture with a dimmer, it may flicker, remain on at full power, or be damaged.

This Sylvania Superia 5W DIM is exceptionally priced — only €0.10 more expensive than the equivalent non-dimmable 4.6W model. This makes the dimmable model a particularly attractive choice.

Should I choose the 5W or 6.1W dimmable Superia?

The choice depends on the wattage of your old halogen lamp. Both are dimmable Superia-class lamps (25,000 h, 5-year warranty, 4 color temperature variants):

  • This 5W DIM (460/480 lm): replaces a 40W halogen — general lighting, mood lighting, slightly softer light. Price €8.05.
  • 6.1W DIM (621 lm): replaces a 50W halogen — more powerful spotlight. Price €10.60.

Measure the wattage of your old halogen lamp — if it was 35–40W, choose this 5W. If it was 50W, choose the 6.1W. The price difference is €2.55 per lamp — small for installations with one or two lamps, but significant for larger installations.

Does this bulb work with an old halogen dimmer?

Possibly, but reliability is not guaranteed. LED lamps and old halogen dimmers use different technology:

  • Halogen dimmers: designed for high loads (typically 60–500W) — the low load of an LED lamp can cause flickering
  • LED-compatible dimmers: designed for low loads and to work with the electronics of LED lamps

Common problems with old halogen dimmers:

  • Flickering at low levels
  • Not turning off even when the dimmer is at minimum (the lamp remains dimly lit)
  • Jumping/stuttering when transitioning between different levels
  • Annoying auditory frequency

We recommend switching to an LED-compatible dimmer. You can find compatible dimmers in the Electrical Supplies → Dimmers category.

Why does dimmable cost only €0.10 more than non-dimmable?

This is an exceptionally small price difference—typically, the price difference for a dimmable LED bulb is +€1–2 compared to a non-dimmable model. Explanations:

  • The Sylvanian Superia series likely has optimized production costs, which means adding a dimmer circuit does not significantly increase the price.
  • Volume benefits—Sylvania sells both versions in large quantities, so costs are evenly distributed.
  • Market proposition—Sylvania may keep the price difference small to attract customers to the dimmable model, which is more flexible for the future.

In practice, this means that it is almost always worth choosing the dimmable model, even if you don't need dimming right now. If you later want to add a dimmer, the bulb is already ready for it—no need to change bulbs.
