Compatibility and installation

Dimmable — what does this mean in practice?

This lamp is designed to work with dimmers — you can smoothly adjust the light level between minimum and maximum brightness. Important considerations:

  • An LED-compatible dimmer circuit is required — old halogen dimmers may not work reliably with this lamp
  • Dimming may cause slight flickering or stuttering at low power levels — this is a common phenomenon in LED dimming
  • The minimum power threshold is typically around 10–15% — below this, the lamp may turn off completely
  • Check compatibility — Sylvania maintains a list of approved dimmers, contact our customer service if you have any doubts

Compatible dimmers can be found in the Electrical Supplies → Dimmers category.

Typical applications for dimmed lamps

  • Restaurants and hotels — dimmer lighting during evenings, brighter during the day
  • Households — ambient lighting for living rooms and bedrooms
  • Meeting rooms — light is adjusted during presentations and video conferences
  • Shops and gallery display areas — highlighting different product categories
  • Home theaters and entertainment areas — light level during movies and video games

When to choose dimmable, when not?

Sylvania offers both dimmable and non-dimmable models in the Superia MR16 series:

  • Dimmable (this one, 6.1W DIM): when the fixture has a dimmer or you plan to add one — households, restaurants, hotels, meeting rooms
  • Non-dimmable (6W): when the fixture does not have a dimmer — offices, shops, warehouses, corridors. Slightly more affordable (8.58 € vs 10.60 €).

If the fixture does not have a dimmer and you do not plan to add one, the non-dimmable model is a more affordable option.

4 color temperature variants — for all uses

  • 2700K (extra warm, incandescent-like): households, restaurants, hotels, vintage fixtures
  • 3000K (warm white): most common for ambient lighting
  • 4000K (natural white): offices, meeting rooms, shops
  • 6500K (daylight): museums, gallery staff rooms, areas requiring precise work

Superia class — for professional use

This is Sylvania's premium class LED, which withstands the demands of professional use:

  • Lifespan 25,000 h — 67% longer than standard Retro
  • Switching cycles over 100,000 — double that of standard Retro
  • 5-year warranty — longer than standard 2–3 year LED warranties

MR16 size with 44 mm diameter

This lamp is a compact MR16 version — slightly smaller (44 mm) than standard MR16 (51 mm), but maintains MR16 compatibility with its GU5.3 base.

Requires a 12V transformer

This is a 12V low-voltage lamp that requires a 12V transformer to operate. Works with both magnetic and electronic transformers, but compatibility with electronic transformers depends on the exact model of the transformer. The most common compatible brands are Helvar, Tridonic, Osram, Ledvance, and Vossloh-Schwabe.

Transformer and dimmer — both must be LED-compatible

In a dimmable system, both components must be LED-compatible:

  • Transformer: 12V LED-compatible (magnetic or electronic)
  • Dimmer: LED-compatible — old halogen dimmers may not work

If you have doubts about system compatibility, contact our customer service — we will help you choose the right accessories.

Glass body — premium quality

The all-glass body produces a more even light distribution than plastic, does not yellow over time, and gives a halogen-like appearance.

Replaces 50W GU5.3 halogen — 88% energy savings

This 6.1W LED produces the same luminous output (621 lm) as a traditional 50W GU5.3 halogen. Energy savings are approximately 88%, and the lifespan is 6–12 times longer.

36° beam angle — wide spotlight

Flood-class spotlight, suitable for general lighting, ambient lighting, and spotlights.

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the fixture has a GU5.3 base (not GU4 or GU10)
  2. Check that a 12V transformer is in use (magnetic or electronic)
  3. Check that the transformer's wattage is sufficient for the total wattage of the lamps
  4. Check that the dimmer is LED-compatible
  5. Check that the dimensions of the fixture (44 mm diameter, 50 mm length) fit
  6. Turn off the power before installation — do not touch the lamp glass with your fingers
  7. Install the lamp and turn on the power
  8. Test the dimming function at different levels — check that the lamp does not flicker annoyingly

What is a dimmable LED and how does it differ from a non-dimmable one?

A dimmable LED is a bulb designed to work with dimmers — you can adjust the light level steplessly. A non-dimmable LED only operates at full power. Important differences:

  • Dimmable: contains a special electronic circuit that can receive a dimming signal. This increases manufacturing costs, which is why the price is slightly higher.
  • Non-dimmable: only operates at full power. If installed in a luminaire with a dimmer, it may flicker, remain on at full power, or be damaged.

Choose a dimmable model only if the luminaire has a dimmer or if you plan to add one. Otherwise, the non-dimmable Superia 6W is a more affordable option (€8.58 vs €10.60).

Does this bulb work with an old halogen dimmer?

Possibly, but reliability is not guaranteed. LED lamps and old halogen dimmers use different technology:

  • Halogen dimmers: designed for high loads (typically 60–500W) — the low load of an LED lamp can cause flickering
  • LED-compatible dimmers: designed for low loads and to work with the electronics of LED lamps

Common problems with old halogen dimmers:

  • Flickering at low levels
  • Not turning off even when the dimmer is at minimum (the lamp remains dimly lit)
  • Jumping/stuttering when transitioning between different levels
  • Annoying auditory frequency

We recommend switching to an LED-compatible dimmer. You can find compatible dimmers in the Electrical Supplies → Dimmers category.

Why is a dimmable light bulb more expensive than a non-dimmable one?

Dimmable LEDs include a special electronic circuit (driver) that:

  • Can interpret the dimming signal from the dimmer
  • Adjusts the current to the LED chip steplessly without flickering
  • Operates over a wide dimming range (typically 10–100%)
  • Has been tested for compatibility with the most common LED dimmers

These features increase manufacturing costs. The price difference in this Sylvania Superia series is:

  • Non-dimmable 6W: 8.58 €
  • Dimmable 6.1W (this one): 10.60 €
  • Price difference: 2.02 € (+23.5 %)

If the luminaire does not have a dimmer, the non-dimmable option is a more sensible choice. If adjustable lighting is required, the price difference is a small investment in functionality.

Can I buy a LED-compatible dimmer separately?

Yes. We have several LED-compatible dimmers in our selection – check out the Electrical Supplies → Dimmers category.

When making your choice, consider the following:

  • Minimum and maximum load: check that the dimmer is suitable for the total wattage of the lamps
  • Triac or phase-cut type: modern LED dimmers are often "trailing edge" type
  • Adjustment range: good LED dimmers adjust from 1–100%
  • Package installation or LED-specific: some dimmers support both LEDs and halogens

If you are unsure, please contact our customer service – we will help you choose the right dimmer for your light fixture and lamps.
