The Patron Starter S10 is a traditional fluorescent lamp starter that ignites the fluorescent tube when the power supply is switched on. It is suitable for all 4–65 W fluorescent lamps that use an electromagnetic ballast (EM ballast). This is a consumable part — the starter is generally replaced when changing the fluorescent lamp or when the fluorescent tube begins to flicker upon ignition.

For a single lamp (S10 — single). Suitable for 4–65 W fluorescent lamps with an EM ballast. NOT suitable for LED tubes or HF electronic ballasts.

Technical specifications

  • Product type: fluorescent lamp starter
  • Model: S10 (single-lamp starter)
  • Suitable lamp power: 4–65 W
  • Lamp type: T8, T12, and other traditional fluorescent tubes
  • Compatibility: electromagnetic ballast (EM ballast)
  • NOT suitable for: HF electronic ballasts or LED fluorescent tubes
  • Product code (EAN): 5941019828993
Compatibility and installation

S10 vs S2 vs LED starter

There are several models of fluorescent lamp starters:

  • S10 (this one): for a single lamp, 4–65 W power range — the most common starter for home and general use
  • S2: for two lamps (connected in series), for lower power ranges
  • LED starter: a special model for LED fluorescent tubes — NOT suitable for standard fluorescent lamps

Check the old starter or the luminaire's user manual for the correct type. The S10 is suitable for the vast majority of standard home and office luminaires.

When should the starter be replaced?

The need for starter replacement usually arises when:

  • The fluorescent tube flickers for a long time before igniting (over 1–2 seconds)
  • The fluorescent tube does not ignite at all, even with a new tube installed
  • The ends of the fluorescent tube glow red
  • As general maintenance when installing a new fluorescent lamp

The service life of a starter is typically several years, but the cost is low, and it is good practice to replace it at the same time the fluorescent lamp is replaced.

NOT suitable for LED fluorescent tubes

If you are installing an LED tube to replace a traditional one, do not use this starter — LED tubes have their own special starters, which are often included with the lamp. Using an S10 starter with an LED tube may cause the lamp to flicker or be damaged.

Installation

The starter is a small cylindrical component located inside the fluorescent luminaire. Replacement:

  1. Switch off the power at the main switch
  2. Let the fluorescent lamp cool down
  3. Locate the starter in the luminaire housing — usually at the end where the fluorescent lamp and ballast are also located
  4. Turn the old starter a quarter turn (counter-clockwise) — it will detach easily
  5. Install the new starter using the same mechanism — push in and turn a quarter turn clockwise
  6. Switch on the power and test
Power: 4-65W

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

How do I know if my light fixture has an electromagnetic or a high-frequency ballast?

Check inside the luminaire:

  • EM (electromagnetic) ballast: A heavy metal part, which may be an iron core ballast. The fluorescent lamp flickers slightly when starting (1–3 flashes) before lighting up properly. Requires a separate starter.
  • HF (electronic) ballast: A lightweight electronic casing, no heavy ballast. The fluorescent lamp lights up immediately without flickering. Does NOT require a separate starter.

An S10 starter is only needed for luminaires with an EM ballast. With HF electronic ballasts, the starter is integrated into the ballast, and a separate starter is not used.

Can I use an S10 starter in a fluorescent light fixture with multiple tubes?

The S10 is designed for a single lamp. For luminaires with multiple fluorescent lamps, each lamp requires its own starter, or alternatively, an S2 starter (for two lamps connected in series).

Check the luminaire for:

  • 2 separate starters: use 2 S10 starters (one per lamp)
  • 1 starter for 2 lamps: use an S2 starter (for the power rating of one lamp but connected in series)
  • 4 lamps: 4 S10 starters or 2 S2 starters

In case of difficulty, consult an electrician — using the wrong starter can cause the lamp to flicker or lead to premature failure of the starter.

Should the starter always be replaced when replacing a fluorescent lamp?

Not necessarily, but it is a common and recommended practice. The lifespan of a starter is linked to the lifespan of a fluorescent lamp — both wear out at the same rate in the same circuit.

Why replace it:

  • The cost is low — a starter costs a few euros
  • An old starter may be in poor condition, and the unstable ignition it causes can shorten the life of a new lamp
  • Effortless — replacing it takes less than a minute

If you switch to a new lamp directly and the old one ignites without any problems, you do not need to replace the starter immediately — just monitor the situation and replace it if ignition problems occur.

Is there a modern alternative to replacing a traditional fluorescent tube and starter?

Yes — LED tubes replace traditional T8 fluorescent lamps, and many of them are designed to work directly with the old EM ballast (EM compatibility mentioned in the lamp's data sheet).

When replacing a fluorescent tube with an LED tube:

  • The old S10 starter is removed and replaced with the LED starter included with the LED tube
  • The old EM ballast can remain in place (if the lamp's data sheet indicates EM compatibility)
  • Benefit of the LED tube: 50,000 h lifespan vs. 12,000 h with a traditional one, 40–60% lower power consumption
