Compatibility and installation

Direct replacement for halogen luminaires

This downlight is designed to replace old 12 V halogen luminaires without renewing the entire installation. You can retain existing wiring, transformer, and dimmer — thanks to quick connectors, replacement is fast and simple.

12 V AC/DC — transformer required

The luminaire operates on 12 V DC or AC voltage. It is NOT suitable for direct 230 V mains voltage — a 12 V transformer (either an existing halogen transformer or a new LED transformer) is always required. Explore our selection in the transformers category.

Dimming only with AC supply

Dimming only works when the luminaire is connected to an AC voltage. If you use a DC supply, dimming will not work. Ensure that the dimmer used is designed for LED loads and is compatible with your chosen transformer. A list of recommended dimmers and transformers can be found on Hide-a-lite's website.

Color temperature selectable

The product is available in two color temperature options: 3000 K (warm white) and 4000 K (neutral white). Choose your desired variant during the ordering process. Warm white is suitable for homes and living areas, neutral white for offices and workspaces.

IP44 — also for damp areas

IP44 protection withstands splashing water and is suitable for damp indoor areas: bathroom (protection zone 2 and beyond), WC, utility room, sauna. Always check regulations regarding protection zones for bathroom installations.

Mounting hole 57–60 mm

The luminaire fits into an existing 57–60 mm mounting hole with clamping springs — suitable for most holes left by halogen luminaires. Outer diameter approximately 58–63 mm.

Installation checklist

  1. Turn off power at the main switch
  2. Remove the old halogen luminaire from the mounting hole
  3. Check the condition of the transformer — a new LED transformer is recommended if the old one is more than 10 years old
  4. Connect the new downlight with quick connectors to the existing wiring
  5. Insert the luminaire into place — the clamping springs will hold it in the 57–60 mm opening
  6. Turn on the power and test, including dimming if applicable
Color temperature: 4000K

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

Can the light fixture be connected directly to 230 V mains voltage?

No. This Hide-a-lite downlight is a 12V fixture that always requires a 12V transformer between the mains voltage and the fixture.

If you are replacing an old halogen light, the halogen light's transformer is usually already in place, and you can use it for the new LED installation. Check that the transformer is in good condition and compatible with the LED load — halogen transformers over 10 years old should often be replaced with an LED-compatible transformer. Explore our selection in the transformers category.

Why does dimming only work with an AC supply?

Dimming is based on the shape of the AC voltage — the dimmer "cuts" a portion of each voltage cycle, reducing the power supplied to the light fixture. This technique only works with alternating current (AC), not direct current (DC).

If the installation receives a DC supply (e.g., from a battery-powered system or an LED driver), dimming is not possible. In practice, most 12 V transformers produce AC voltage, so dimming works normally. If necessary, confirm the transformer type with an electrician.

What is the difference between the 3000 K and 4000 K versions?

Color temperature affects the light's hue:

  • 3000 K — warm white: 300 lm, cozy and relaxing atmosphere. Suitable for homes, living areas, bedrooms, and bathrooms.
  • 4000 K — neutral white: 365 lm, clear and work-supportive light. Suitable for offices, utility rooms, and public spaces.

Choose the color temperature during the ordering process via the variant selection. Most households prefer 3000 K warm white — neutral is better for general lighting in workspaces.

Can the LED part be replaced later?

No. The LED is an integrated part of the luminaire and cannot be replaced separately like a traditional bulb. The entire luminaire is a single, unified unit.

This is typical for modern LED downlights and allows for a slimmer design and better thermal management. The luminaire has a lifespan of 75,000 hours (L70, Ta 25 °C) — which corresponds to almost 9 years of continuous use or several decades of normal use. The LED therefore lasts practically the entire lifetime of the luminaire.
