Sylvania Coralstar is a T5 fluorescent lamp designed for special use in saltwater aquariums. The actinic blue light mimics the lighting conditions found on coral reefs and promotes the growth of corals and invertebrates by supporting the development of zooxanthellae. The lamp is also suitable for conservatories and houseplants.

T5 fluorescent lamp, G5 base. Diameter 16 mm, length 1149 mm. Requires an electronic ballast. Specially suitable for saltwater aquariums.

Compatibility and use

Actinic blue — designed for corals

Actinic blue light is close to the 420 nm wavelength — exactly the part of the spectrum that corals and other saltwater aquarium organisms utilize via zooxanthellae (symbiotic algae). This promotes the health and growth of corals and brings out their true colors.

Combining with other lights

Coralstar works excellently when combined with Sylvania Aquastar or other aquarium lights — this completes the light spectrum and makes the aquarium look more vividly colored. Combined use highlights the colors of the fish as well as the corals.

Applications

  • Saltwater and hard-water aquariums
  • Cultivation of corals and invertebrates
  • Conservatories
  • Supplemental lighting for houseplants

Installation

The lamp requires an electronic T5 ballast to operate. Installation should be performed by an electrician, and the lamp is installed inside the aquarium lid. Check the compatibility of your fixture before purchasing — there are specific aquarium fixtures for T5 fluorescent lamps that are not directly interchangeable with LED technology.

Discontinued product — limited availability

Sylvania no longer manufactures the Coralstar model. Available lamps will be sold until out of stock, and no further production is planned. If you have an aquarium fixture specifically designed for Coralstar lamps, it is advisable to stock up on several now while they are still available. In the future, a replacement should be sought from a new LED-based aquarium lamp that provides a similar actinic spectrum.

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

What is actinic blue light and why is it suitable for aquarium use?

Actinic blue light is near the 420 nm wavelength — the blue-violet range of the spectrum that mimics the light in the deeper layers of seawater. Corals, anemones, and other marine animals contain zooxanthellae — tiny symbiotic algae — that utilize precisely this light for photosynthesis.

In practice, actinic light:

  • Promotes coral health and growth
  • Brings out the natural fluorescent colors of corals
  • Reduces algae growth on aquarium glass surfaces

An actinic lamp is generally used in combination with white light — blue light alone is too dim for general aquarium lighting.

Can Coralstar be replaced with an LED lamp?

LED options are available specifically for saltwater aquariums, but check the spectrum carefully before switching. Only certain LED lamps offer the actinic blue spectrum that corals need.

In addition, your current fixture is designed for a T5 fluorescent lamp, and a direct LED swap is not possible in the old fixture — you must either replace the entire fixture with one that is LED-compatible or look for retrofit LED tubes that work with the existing ballast (these are rarer for aquarium use).

We recommend asking customer service about up-to-date LED options for reef aquarium use.

How does the Sylvania Aquastar model differ from the Coralstar?

Sylvania aquarium lamps typically have two main series:

  • Coralstar (this one): actinic blue spectrum — for corals and the cultivation of invertebrates in saltwater aquariums
  • Aquastar: broad white spectrum — for general lighting in freshwater and saltwater aquariums, brings out the colors of fish and plants

A combination — Coralstar + Aquastar in the same lighting fixture — provides the best results in saltwater aquariums: the actinic light supports coral growth and the white light provides general lighting for the aquarium. Most two-lamp T5 fixtures use exactly this combination.

Are there any special considerations regarding the lamp's lifespan?

The nominal service life of Coralstar is 15,000 hours. For aquarium use, it is worth noting:

  • The spectrum weakens over time: after just 8,000–10,000 operating hours, the actinic spectrum can begin to shift and the effect on coral growth can diminish. This occurs well before the physical end of the lamp's life.
  • Replacement cycle: aquarium enthusiasts typically replace T5 lamps every 8–12 months, even if they still light up, to keep the growth conditions for corals optimal.

When the spectrum changes, it is noticeable through the fading of coral colors and slowed growth — that is when it is time to replace the lamp, even if it still lights up normally.
