Compatibility and use

Shatterproof—a hygiene requirement in commercial kitchens

The use of standard glass bulbs in commercial kitchens is often prohibited by food hygiene regulations—a broken bulb can drop glass shards into food being prepared or displayed. The glass cover of a shatterproof bulb is coated with a film that holds the shards together even if the bulb breaks. This makes it safe to use the bulb above food.

Applications

  • Commercial kitchens: keeping food warm at takeaway counters
  • Restaurants: buffet tables, hot display cases
  • Commercial kitchens: hospitals, schools, nurseries
  • Butchers and delis: keeping displayed food warm

Hatco—an established brand in the industry

Hatco is an American company specialising in heating equipment for commercial kitchens. Its IR heat lamps are the industry standard—if you use a Hatco food warmer or takeaway counter, it is best to stick with bulbs from the same manufacturer to ensure optimal compatibility.

Service life and energy consumption

An infrared heat lamp typically has a service life of 5,000–8,000 hours of continuous use. A 40 W bulb uses approximately 1 kWh of electricity in 25 hours of use—allow for an increase in electricity consumption when the bulb is left on continuously during opening hours.

Pack of 12

The pack contains 12 bulbs, which is convenient for commercial use. We recommend keeping a few spare bulbs in the kitchen store—a broken IR heat lamp can disrupt sales, so a quick replacement is important.

What does shatterproof lamp mean?

In a shatter-resistant lamp, the glass bulb is coated with a special film. If the glass breaks, the film holds the shards together so they do not fall off.

Practical significance:

  • Food protection: a broken lamp will not contaminate food with glass shards
  • User safety: no glass shards on the work surface or floor
  • Hygiene requirements: in most professional kitchens, a legal requirement for lighting located above food

The use of a shatter-resistant lamp is often a requirement of food hygiene regulations — verify the requirements of your own country or municipality.

What is the intended use of an infrared heat lamp?

An infrared (IR) heat lamp produces primarily heat rather than visible light. Electrical energy is converted into heat, which radiates directly onto the target without needing to heat the air in between.

Typical applications:

  • Keeping food warm: restaurant pickup counters, buffet tables
  • Animal heating: chicken coops, pig/sheep farms (warming offspring)
  • Bathroom supplemental heating: quick heat without needing to heat the entire room
  • Drying paint and glue: industrial applications

The thermal efficiency of an IR lamp is approximately 60–80% of its electricity consumption—the rest is emitted as visible light.

What is the lifespan of a heat lamp?

The nominal service life of a Hatco IR heat lamp is typically 5,000–8,000 hours. In professional use, where the lamp is on during business hours (e.g., 8–12 hours per day), the service life corresponds to approximately 1.5–2.5 years.

Factors affecting service life include:

  • On/off cycles: a lamp that is switched on and off frequently wears out faster than one that burns continuously
  • Operating environment temperature: humidity or excessive temperature fluctuations
  • Vibration: shaking puts strain on the lamp structure

Keep spare lamps in the kitchen storage — an IR lamp failure can interrupt food service, so quick replacement is important for business continuity.

Does the Hatco lamp fit into warming cabinets from other manufacturers?

Generally yes — the E27 base and standard 250 V allow the bulb to be used in a wide variety of heat cabinets and pickup stations. However, check the device's user manual for:

  • Required wattage: 40 W vs other wattages (250 W, 375 W etc.) — ensure that 40 W is sufficient
  • Base size: E27 is the most common, but the device may require an ER (R125, R150) type bulb
  • Shatterproof requirement: most professional equipment requires it

For Hatco-branded equipment, Hatco's own bulbs are a safe choice. If you are using a device from another manufacturer, check the replacement bulbs approved by the manufacturer.
