The Sylvania ToLEDo Ultra Output Platinum is a top-of-the-line T8 LED tube that replaces traditional 36W T8 fluorescent tubes. Its 100,000-hour lifespan and 201 lm/W efficiency make it a reliable choice for offices, supermarkets, industrial facilities, and other demanding professional applications. Compatibility and installation

Dual compatibility — CCG and AC

This lamp operates in two different ways, which adds flexibility to the installation:

Installation method 1: CCG (magnetic ballast)

  • Suitable for older fluorescent luminaires with a magnetic ballast
  • The starter must be replaced with an LED-compatible one (short-circuit S-starter)
  • The magnetic ballast remains unchanged
  • Direct replacement for the fluorescent tube as a single lamp replacement

Installation method 2: AC (direct mains voltage)

  • Suitable for new LED luminaires or renovations
  • Ballast and starter are removed — wiring modification required
  • The lamp is connected directly to 230V mains voltage
  • Requires installation work by an electrician

This is a standard-sized 36W T8 fluorescent tube replacement, most commonly used in:

Glass tube structure — omnidirectional light distribution

The glass tube structure produces a 360° omnidirectional light distribution like a traditional T8 fluorescent tube. This differs from many LED tubes where light is directed in only one direction — more even light distribution in the space, fewer shadows, suitable for reflector luminaires where light is distributed to the edges of the luminaire.

EU EcoDesign restrictions — fluorescent tube ban

The EU EcoDesign directive 2019/2020 restricts the sale of T8 fluorescent tubes for new systems from 25.8.2023. This LED alternative is fully compliant with EU regulations, a direct replacement for fluorescent tubes with CCG installation method, and a long-term solution — the 100,000-hour lifespan makes it a future-proof choice.

Installation checklist

CCG installation (magnetic ballast):

  1. Check that the luminaire has a T8 G13 base and contains a magnetic ballast
  2. Turn off the power at the main switch
  3. Remove the old fluorescent tube
  4. Replace the old starter with an LED-compatible one
  5. Install the new LED tube in the same holder
  6. Turn on the power and check operation

AC installation (direct 230V):

  1. Electrician available — requires wiring modification
  2. Turn off the power at the main switch
  3. Electrician removes the ballast and starter
  4. Wired directly to 230V mains voltage
  5. Install the LED tube in place
  6. Turn on the power and check operation

What is the difference between the Sylvania ToLEDo, ToLEDo Superia and ToLEDo Ultra Output Platinum series?

Sylvania offers a three-tier T8 LED hierarchy, differentiated by durability and luminous efficacy:

  • ToLEDo (basic): lifespan approx. 30,000–50,000 h, luminous efficacy 100–130 lm/W, most affordable option.
  • ToLEDo Superia (premium): lifespan approx. 50,000–70,000 h, luminous efficacy 130–170 lm/W, improved color rendering.
  • ToLEDo Ultra Output Platinum (top-tier): lifespan 100,000 h, luminous efficacy 201 lm/W, 200,000 switching cycles, dual compatibility (CCG + AC).

The Ultra Output Platinum is particularly suitable for demanding professional applications where reliability and long lifespan are crucial: hospitals, supermarkets with long operating hours, industry, railway stations, and other maintenance-free sites. The price is the highest, but the cost per operating hour is the lowest.

What does CCG stand for, and does it also work with electronic HF accessories?

CCG = Conventional Control Gear = traditional magnetic ballast. T8 LED tube compatibility types:

  • CCG (magnetic ballast): this Sylvania works – the starter must be replaced with an LED-compatible one
  • HF / ECG (electronic ballast): this Sylvania does NOT work directly with an HF ballast
  • AC (direct 230V): this Sylvania works – requires wiring modification

If you have an electronic HF ballast, the options are: converting to an AC installation (an electrician removes the HF ballast) or choosing an HF-compatible product from our range of T8 LED tubes. If you are unsure about the type of ballast in your system, please contact our customer service.

Can I replace an old 36W T8 fluorescent tube with this 12W LED?

Yes, and you save a significant amount of energy. This 12W LED produces the same light output (2,350–2,520 lm) as a traditional 36W T8 fluorescent tube — an energy saving of about 67%. Please check that:

  • The luminaire has a T8 G13 base (double-ended, 1200 mm length)
  • Either a magnetic ballast (CCG installation) is used, or an electrician removes the control gear (AC installation)
  • For CCG installations, the starter must be replaced with an LED-compatible one

In addition to energy savings, the service life is 4–8 times longer: 100,000 h vs the fluorescent tube's 12,000–24,000 h. Long-term costs are significantly lower.

How does a 100,000-hour lifespan affect the total cost?
