Compatibility and installation

Operates directly on 240V mains voltage

This Tungsram R7s halogen bulb connects directly to household 230–240V mains voltage — no transformer or ballast needed. This is a significant advantage compared to, for example, MR11/MR16 halogen bulbs, which require a 12V transformer.

R7s base — linear capsule between spring clips

The R7s base is at both ends of the lamp, and the lamp is installed between two spring clips. The clips hold the lamp in place, and when one clip is gently pushed back, the lamp can be inserted. Installation is simple but requires caution — do not bend the glass part of the lamp.

Standard length 119 mm — fits 100–150W R7s luminaires

R7s halogen capsules are available in several lengths depending on power:

  • 60–80W: approx. 78 mm
  • 100–150W: 119 mm (this lamp)
  • 200–300W: approx. 189 mm
  • 500W: approx. 254 mm

This 119 mm bulb fits all standard R7s 100–150W luminaires.

Must be installed horizontally

R7s halogen bulbs are designed to be installed horizontally — the tilt angle must not exceed ±4° from the horizontal. Vertical installation or a sharp tilt causes:

  • Significantly shortened lamp lifespan
  • Uneven heating of the tungsten filament
  • Possible lamp breakage

Check the luminaire's orientation before installation.

Do not touch the lamp's glass surface with your fingers

The glass surface of a halogen lamp is particularly sensitive to grease and dirt. Grease from the skin heats up when the lamp is on, causing uneven heating and potentially breaking the lamp. Always handle the lamp with clean hands or using paper. If the glass surface gets dirty, gently clean it with cotton wool moistened with alcohol.

Typical applications

  • Outdoor floodlights — work lights, garden lights, spotlights
  • Indoor spotlights — display cases, art lighting, decorative luminaires
  • Restaurants and hotels — low-ceiling accent lighting
  • Studio and exhibition lights — film, photography, exhibitions

Short lifespan — consider an LED alternative

The lifespan of an R7s halogen bulb is typically 2,000 hours, which is significantly shorter than, for example, ordinary halogen bulbs (2,000–4,000 h) or LED alternatives (25,000–50,000 h). An R7s LED bulb can replace halogen directly with the same base, but uses about 80% less energy and lasts up to 25 times longer. Explore our selection in the R7s LED bulbs category.

However, halogen retains its advantages with perfect CRI 100 color rendering, which is important for lighting artworks and jewelry, for example — premium LEDs achieve around Ra 90–95, not a perfect 100.

Dimmability

This R7s halogen bulb is 100% dimmable with all standard halogen dimmers (both electronic and triac dimmers). Halogen dims smoothly without flickering, and the tone warms up when dimmed (the same effect as an incandescent bulb).

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the luminaire has an R7s base (double-ended, spring clips)
  2. Check that the luminaire has space for a 119 mm lamp (a little more space for installation)
  3. Check that the luminaire can be installed horizontally (±4°)
  4. Use protective gloves or paper — do not touch the glass surface with your fingers
  5. Turn off the power before installation
  6. Gently push one clip back and place the lamp between the clips
  7. Release the clip — the lamp will stay in place with the springs
  8. Turn on the power and check operation

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

Can I install this R7s bulb vertically?

No. R7s halogen lamps are designed to be installed horizontally — the tilt angle should not exceed ±4° from the horizontal. Vertical installation or a steep tilt causes uneven heating of the tungsten filament, significantly shortening the lamp's lifespan, and potential lamp failure. If the luminaire is installed vertically, consider an R7s LED lamp, which can withstand different installations better.

Is R7s LED a better alternative than halogen?

It depends on the intended use:

R7s LED is better for: energy saving (approx. 80% saving), longer lifespan (25,000–50,000 h vs. 2,000 h for halogen), and if the installation is not horizontal. LED does not heat up as much and is safer for prolonged use.

Halogen is better if: perfect color rendering (CRI 100) is a priority. Halogen produces the most natural color possible, which is important when illuminating artworks, jewelry, and colorful products. Premium LEDs reach about Ra 90–95, not a perfect 100.

For most applications, LED is the better choice. Halogen retains its advantages in professional use (museums, gallery staff, jewelry stores) and in spaces where perfect color rendering is essential.

Why is the lifespan of R7s halogen so short compared to other halogens?

An R7s halogen capsule heats up very intensely in a small volume — there is very high pressure and temperature inside the glass wall. This causes:

  • Rapid evaporation of the tungsten filament — the filament thins with use
  • Heating of the glass wall — which accelerates component wear
  • Depletion of the halogen cycle — the internal halogen gas helps return evaporated tungsten back to the filament, but this process weakens over time

The typical lifespan of an R7s halogen is 2,000 hours, which is significantly shorter than conventional halogen lamps (2,000–4,000 h) or LED alternatives (25,000–50,000 h).

How do I safely install an R7s halogen lamp?

Installing an R7s halogen lamp requires a few important steps:

  1. Turn off the power — wait for the old bulb (if replacing) to cool down
  2. Use protective gloves or paper — do not touch the glass surface of the bulb with your fingers, as grease from your skin can break the bulb during operation
  3. Open the luminaire housing and gently push one of the spring clips backward
  4. Place the bulb between the clips so that the R7s bases are against the springs
  5. Release the clip — the bulb will remain in place due to the tension of the springs
  6. Check that the bulb is firmly in place and horizontal (±4°)
  7. Close the luminaire housing and turn on the power

If the glass surface accidentally gets dirty, gently clean it with an alcohol-moistened cotton swab before use.
