Patroni's 36-watt UV-A blacklight tube is a replacement tube for insect traps and other luminaires designed for standard 36W T8 fluorescent tubes. UV-A radiation attracts flying insects, and the clear glass also allows visible blue-violet light to pass through. The tube operates in a fixture with a 36W fluorescent lamp ballast.

Compatibility and installation

In terms of dimensions and base, the tube is a standard 36W T8 fluorescent tube, but it emits in the UV-A range and does not produce white light suitable for general lighting. The tube only works in a fixture with a 36W fluorescent ballast: a magnetic ballast and starter or an electronic ballast. If the fixture has been modified for LED tubes by bypassing the ballast, the fluorescent tube will not ignite. Wiring modifications should be performed by a qualified electrician.

This tube is not a UVB lamp for reptiles nor a germicidal UV-C lamp. Avoid looking directly at the lit tube for extended periods from a close distance. The fluorescent tube contains mercury; please take the used tube intact to an electrical and electronic waste collection point.

  1. Check your old tube to ensure the power is 36W and the length is approximately 1200 mm.
  2. Disconnect power from the trap and allow the tube to cool.
  3. Turn the old tube a quarter turn, remove it, and install the new one in the same way.
  4. If the fixture has a starter, replace it at the same time.

Is this tube suitable as a UVB light for reptiles in a terrarium?

Not suitable. The product information states that the tube's radiation type is UV-A, and its intended use is for attracting insects. Reptiles require UVB radiation to synthesize vitamin D3, and this tube is not intended for that purpose.

For reptiles, please choose a UVB lamp specifically designed for terrarium use. You can find options in the terrarium lamps category.

Will the tube light up in a fixture that has had an LED tube in it?

It depends on whether the luminaire's ballast is still connected. A UV-A blacklight tube is a fluorescent tube, so it requires a 36 W ballast to operate: a choke and starter or an electronic ballast.

If the luminaire has been modified for an LED tube so that the ballast has been bypassed and mains voltage is supplied directly to the socket, the fluorescent tube will not light up. Reverting the luminaire for use with a fluorescent tube is a job for an electrician.

Is UV-A blacklight dangerous to the eyes or skin?

When used normally in an insect trap, a UV-A tube does not pose a particular risk, but it is not intended for staring at. Avoid looking directly into a lit tube from a close distance for extended periods and use the tube in a trap or fixture designed for it.

The tube is not a tanning lamp or a disinfecting UV-C lamp, so do not use it for those purposes.

How often should the pipe be replaced?

The average nominal service life of the tube is 5,000 hours, which is approximately seven months in continuous use. UV radiation gradually weakens even before the tube burns out, so the trap's efficiency may decrease, even if the tube still appears to be lit.

The fluorescent tube contains mercury. Take the used tube, intact, to a collection point for waste electrical and electronic equipment. Returning fluorescent tubes is free of charge for consumers.
