The G9 LED lamp is an energy-saving replacement for the traditional G9 halogen. With a power of 2 W, it achieves 240 lm of light — corresponding to an approximately 25 W traditional G9 halogen lamp. The compact 13 × 48 mm size allows the lamp to fit into even small spotlights. 220–240 V mains voltage, no need for a transformer — replacement is simple.

G9 base (two-pin 9 mm). 220–240 V mains voltage. Replaces a 25 W halogen. Non-dimmable. CRI 80–89.

Compatibility and installation

G9 — a common decorative spotlight base

G9 is a direct 230 V base — no transformer is needed, even though the base size is small. A two-pin base where the distance between the pins is 9 mm. Common in the following fixtures:

  • Modern chandelier fixtures
  • Decorative lamps (for display and decoration needs)
  • Small spotlights
  • Lighting for interior details

Replaces a 25 W halogen

Energy savings 25 W → 2 W = 92% less electricity consumption. In practice:

  • If you replace 10 G9 halogens with LEDs → approx. €200 savings per year (4 h/day, €0.15/kWh)
  • Service life 15,000–25,000 h vs 2,000 h for halogen — 10 times the longevity

Installation checklist

  1. Cut the power at the main switch
  2. Allow the old lamp to cool down
  3. Pull the old lamp straight out of the base (G9 must be pulled, not twisted)
  4. Install the new LED lamp in place — two pins into the slots
  5. Turn the power on and test

Important: G9 halogens should not be touched with bare hands, but LED lamps do not get as hot — no finger oil issues.

Power: 2W

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

Does an LED G9 fit into an old halogen spotlight?

Generally yes, but check these:

  • Base size: same G9 — fits physically in the same spot
  • Voltage: same 220–240 V — works directly
  • Dimensions: check that the new 13 × 48 mm fits in place of the old bulb (some fixtures have tight spaces)
  • Heat output: LED produces less heat — safer for plastic covers

In most cases, an LED G9 fits a halogen fixture directly without modifications. Compatibility issues are rare: if the fixture has a dimmer, ensure that the LED is dimmable or remove the dimmer.

Why are G9 LEDs usually frosted, but this one is clear?

A clear G9 LED is rarer but can be found on the market. Differences:

  • Frosted (most common): evens out the light, reduces glare
  • Clear (this one): the LED element is directly visible, brighter focal point but can be dazzling

A clear G9 is suitable for fixtures where the bulb is hidden inside a shade — e.g., chandeliers where the shade gathers the light. In open fixtures where the bulb is visible, a clear one can be too dazzling.

Is 240 lm enough for general lighting?

240 lm is approximately the light output of a 25 W incandescent bulb or 2 candles. This is sufficient for:

  • Mood lighting in small rooms
  • Accent lighting (lighting individual objects)
  • Supplementary lighting when general illumination is provided by another lighting system

NOT sufficient for:

  • General lighting in a kitchen or study (1500+ lm required)
  • Reading light (at least 400+ lm)

G9 LED bulbs are primarily options for decorative and mood lighting, generally not solutions for general illumination.

Why is the G9 not dimmable?

This G9 LED model is designed as non-dimmable by default, as dimming requires special electronics that:

  • Increase the size of the bulb (needs more space)
  • Raise the price
  • Require a specific dimmer device (a standard halogen dimmer may not work with an LED)

If you require dimming capability for a G9 LED, look specifically for models marked "Himmennettävä" or "Dimmable". They are available, but the price is higher and the size is slightly larger. In practice, for most G9 decorative lamps, dimming is not essential — they are used with an on/off switch.
