The Philips CorePro LEDtube is an affordable and reliable LED replacement for a traditional T8 fluorescent lamp. At 600 mm in length and with 8 W of power, the lamp produces 800 lm of light — replacing a traditional 18 W T8 fluorescent tube. The lamp is designed to work both with an electromagnetic ballast and directly from 230 V mains (EM/230V), which simplifies installation.

Suitable for electromagnetic ballast (EM) OR direct 230 V mains. EM safety starter included. Non-dimmable. G13 base, 600 mm length.

Compatibility and installation

EM/230V — dual-use

"EM/230V" means that the lamp is suitable for two types of luminaire configurations:

  • EM (Electromagnetic ballast): old T8 fluorescent luminaire containing a ballast and a starter. The lamp works directly with the old ballast.
  • 230V (direct mains power): if the ballast is removed and the connection is made directly to the 230 V mains voltage, the lamp will also function.

NOT suitable for: electronic ballasts (HF ballast). If your luminaire has an HF electronic ballast, please choose a separately suitable LED fluorescent tube.

EM safety starter included

An old T8 fluorescent luminaire requires a starter, without which the lamp will not ignite. An LED fluorescent tube does not need a fluorescent starter (the old "small soap" shape); instead, use the LED safety starter provided in the package. This replaces the old starter and ensures safe operation.

Replaces 18W T8 fluorescent tube

Same 600 mm length, same G13 base — you can replace the old fluorescent lamp with the LED. The energy saving from 18 W → 8 W is approximately 56% immediately, plus the longer service life (50,000 h vs 12,000 h for a fluorescent lamp) reduces replacement labor costs.

Applications

  • Offices and schools — updating old T8 luminaires
  • Warehouses and industrial spaces
  • Hallways and general lighting
  • Households (saunas, garages, basements)

Installation checklist

  1. Switch off the mains power at the main switch
  2. Remove the old T8 fluorescent lamp
  3. Replace the starter with the new LED safety starter (in the package)
  4. Install the LED fluorescent tube by attaching both ends to the G13 base
  5. Check that the ballast is electromagnetic (EM), not HF electronic — if unsure, leave the removal of the electronic ballast and the direct 230 V wiring to an electrician
  6. Turn the power on and test
Power: 8W

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

Does this LED tube directly replace an 18W T8 fluorescent lamp?

Yes. The Philips CorePro LEDtube is designed as a direct replacement for an 18 W T8 fluorescent lamp. The length (600 mm), cap (G13), and shape are the same as those of a traditional T8 fluorescent lamp.

Replacement process:

  1. Switch off the power
  2. Remove the old fluorescent lamp
  3. Replace the starter with the new LED safety starter (included in the package)
  4. Install the LED tube
  5. Switch on the power

The energy saving of 18 W → 8 W is approximately 56%, and the service life of the LED tube is significantly longer than that of a T8 fluorescent lamp.

What is the difference between electromagnetic and electronic ballasts?

There are two types of ballasts for T8 fluorescent luminaires:

  • EM (Electromagnetic): traditional ballast + starter. A heavy metal ballast that tends to flicker during startup. Common in older luminaires.
  • HF (High-Frequency electronic): a modern electronic ballast. Lightweight, no flickering, starts instantly. Common in luminaires installed after the year 2000.

This Philips CorePro LEDtube is ONLY suitable for EM ballasts or direct 230 V mains voltage. NOT SUITABLE for HF electronic ballasts — for these, there are specific "HF" labeled LED tubes. Check your luminaire type before purchasing.

Where should the EM safety starter be installed?

An old T8 fluorescent fixture has a small starter — a cylinder-shaped part that ignites the fluorescent tube when it is switched on. This starter must be replaced with the LED safety starter included in the package when installing an LED tube.

Replacement process:

  1. Switch off the power
  2. The starter is usually located near the fluorescent tube — unscrew it (usually with a quarter turn)
  3. Install the LED safety starter in its place using the same mechanism

Leaving the old starter in place can cause the LED tube to flicker or even damage the lamp.

Is the luminous efficacy of LED tubes better than that of T8 fluorescent lamps?

Yes — clearly better. Comparison:

  • T8 18W fluorescent lamp: approx. 1300 lm of light, i.e., 72 lm/W. Service life approx. 12,000 h.
  • Philips CorePro LEDtube 8W (this one): 800 lm of light, i.e., 100 lm/W. Service life 50,000 h.

Although the LED produces slightly fewer total lumens (800 vs 1300), the luminous efficacy per watt is significantly better (100 vs 72 lm/W). In practice, the LED light is sufficient for most applications just as well or better than the old fluorescent lamp, because the light is directional (240° vs 360° for a fluorescent lamp) and is not wasted upwards.
