The Thorgeon R63 is a traditional incandescent reflector lamp that produces a warm 270 lm light at 40 W power. The R-reflector shape and E27 base make the lamp compatible with common spotlights. This is a classic, non-energy-saving incandescent bulb — suitable for applications where the nostalgic look of the bulb or an immediate LED replacement is not an option. 240 V mains voltage, no transformer required.

R63 — R-reflector shape

The letter R in the lamp name refers to the Reflector shape. R63 refers to the diameter (63 mm) — although in this model, the measured diameter is 35 mm, which indicates a slightly different sizing. Check the physical dimensions of the lamp before purchasing to ensure they fit your fixture.

R-reflector shape:

Incandescent vs. LED — when to choose an incandescent bulb?

EU energy regulations restrict the sale of incandescent bulbs for general lighting use. Most incandescent bulb products have been removed from the market — at Lumenled, we sell them for special applications when an LED alternative is not suitable for one reason or another:

  • Old dimmer system: that does not support LED
  • High-temperature environments: where LED electronics may be damaged
  • Special retro installations: where the look of an incandescent bulb is important

For general use, we recommend an LED alternative — e.g., Sylvania RefLED R39 V3 or a similar LED spotlight lamp.

Lifespan — typical for an incandescent bulb

The lifespan of an incandescent bulb is typically 1,000 hours. This is significantly less than the 15,000–25,000 hours of an LED. If usage is continuous, be prepared for replacements and consider an LED upgrade.

Installation checklist

  1. Turn off the power from the main switch
  2. Let the old bulb cool down completely
  3. Unscrew the old bulb from the E27 base
  4. Install the new bulb — turn clockwise
  5. Turn on the power and test

Why are incandescent bulbs still sold if LEDs are better?

EU energy regulations restrict the use of incandescent bulbs for general lighting, but they are still permitted for special applications. Typical reasons why an incandescent bulb is still a sensible choice:

  • Compatibility with old dimmers: not all LED lamps work with old dimmers, but an incandescent bulb always does
  • High-temperature environments: ovens, saunas — LED electronics can be damaged
  • Compatibility with old installations: special circuits where an LED might cause problems
  • Retro look: when the bulb remains visible and the old incandescent look is desired

For general lighting, an LED is almost always a better option.

What is the R-reflector shape?

The letter R in a lamp model name refers to the reflector. Features of an R reflector lamp:

  • The inside of the lamp has a mirrored surface that directs light forward
  • Prevents light from scattering to the sides and back
  • Suitable for spotlighting and accent lighting

The number after the R mark refers to the lamp's diameter in millimeters:

  • R39: Ø 39 mm — small spotlight lamp
  • R50: Ø 50 mm — medium size
  • R63: Ø 63 mm — large spotlight lamp
  • R80: Ø 80 mm — even larger

Different sizes for different luminaire models. Check the recommended lamp size for your luminaire before purchasing.

Can I replace this with an LED R63 bulb?

Yes. LED R63 bulbs are widely available, and compatibility is good — same base (E27) and same reflector shape. Benefits of switching:

  • Energy savings: 40 W → approx. 4–6 W (over 85% less consumption)
  • Lifespan: 1,000 h → 15,000–25,000 h
  • Less heat: LEDs do not get as hot — safer in small fixtures
  • No UV radiation: does not fade colored materials

Check if the LED bulb is dimmable if you are using a dimmer switch — LED models come in both dimmable and non-dimmable versions.

Can the lifespan of a light bulb be extended?

You cannot generally "extend" the life of an incandescent bulb — its lifespan is a structural limitation. However, some practices can help:

  • Avoid unnecessary on/off cycles: the moment of ignition puts the most strain on the filament
  • Stable voltage: voltage fluctuations shorten the lifespan
  • Do not shake: when hot, the filament is fragile
  • Keep the glass clean: dust and finger oils can cause uneven heating

In practice, the best way to "extend" the total lifespan of your lighting is to switch to LED technology, which naturally has a lifespan 15–25 times longer.
