Compatibility and installation

What is a metal halide lamp?

A metal halide (MH) lamp is a gas discharge lamp that produces strong and consistent light by combining high-pressure mercury with metal halides. This gives the lamp:

  • High luminous efficacy — 6,000 lm from a single lamp even at lower power
  • Neutral color temperature — 4200 K (natural white)
  • General lighting color rendering — CRI 60–69 (suitable for general lighting, not for applications requiring precise color rendering)
  • Compact size — only Ø22.5 × 90 mm produces 6,000 lm

70W vs 150W — when to choose lower power?

Lower power MH lamps are particularly suitable for:

  • Smaller stores — clothing stores, bookstores, small specialty shops
  • Advertising luminaires and floodlights — medium-sized light signs and building facades
  • Pole and bollard lights — pole height 4–8 m
  • Smaller parking areas — local car parks (not large centers)
  • Maintenance of older luminaires — when an existing system is designed for a 70W MH lamp

If you need higher light output for a larger space, check out the 150W model (12,500 lm).

External ballast and ignitor required

This lamp does not operate directly on mains voltage — it requires an external HID ballast (choke) and ignitor. Important notes:

  • The internal voltage of the lamp is 80–100 V, not the same as the mains voltage (230 V)
  • The ballast must be rated for a 70W metal halide lamp (not 150W or other power ratings)
  • An ignitor is needed to start the lamp
  • Installation requires the expertise of an electrician

Compatible ballasts can be found in the Electrical Supplies → Ballasts/Chokes category.

Warm-up time and cool-down

The behavior of HID lamps differs from LED and fluorescent lamps:

  • Warm-up time to full power: approx. 1–4 minutes after switching on
  • Re-ignition after power outage: requires 5–20 minutes of cooling — a hot lamp cannot be re-ignited immediately
  • During lifetime: color temperature may shift slightly and light level may decrease (typical HID phenomenon)

HID lamps are best suited for spaces where lighting is on for long periods and short on/off cycles are not required.

CRI 60–69 — for general lighting, not color accuracy

The color rendering index (CRI 60–69) of this lamp is slightly lower than that of the 150W model (CRI 70–79). In practice, this means:

  • Suitable for general lighting — parking areas, warehouses, outdoor lighting
  • Color differences are not precisely distinguishable — e.g., the colors of clothes and jewelry may appear different compared to natural light
  • Not suitable for retail lighting where color accuracy is important — clothing stores, jewelry stores, exhibition spaces

If you need better color rendering for retail lighting, consider the more powerful 150W model (CRI 70–79) or an LED alternative.

LED alternative — a long-term investment

Metal halide lamps are being phased out as LED technology develops. LED alternatives offer a longer lifespan (LED 50,000–100,000 h vs MH 6,000–15,000 h), lower energy consumption, instant full power, and no cool-down time for re-ignition. However, this Thorgeon metal halide lamp is suitable for maintaining existing HID systems and for applications where an LED replacement cannot yet be made.

Safety notices

  • Use the lamp only in a suitable enclosed luminaire — due to UV radiation, open installation can be dangerous
  • Do not touch a hot lamp
  • If the lamp breaks, act carefully — it contains a small amount of mercury
  • At the end of its life, recycle according to the WEEE directive at a WEEE collection point

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the luminaire has a G12 base and is designed for a 70W metal halide lamp
  2. Check that an external HID ballast and ignitor are used (70W MH rated, not 150W)
  3. Turn off the power at the main switch
  4. Install the lamp — do not touch the glass with your fingers (grease can cause a hot spot)
  5. Turn on the power
  6. Wait 1–4 minutes to reach full power
  7. Check that the lamp burns steadily without flickering

What is a metal halide lamp and how does it differ from LED lamps?

  • Valotehokkuus: MH noin 60–100 lm/W, LED 150–200+ lm/W
  • Syttymisaika: MH vaatii 1–4 minuuttia täyteen tehoon, LED syttyy heti

Monimetallilamppujen vahvuus on korkea valoteho kompaktissa muodossa (6 000 lm tästä 70W lampusta), mikä tekee niistä sopivia m

Should I choose a 70W or 150W Thorgeon metal halide lamp?

The choice depends on the space to be illuminated and the sizing of the existing ballast:

  • This 70W (6,000 lm): suitable for smaller spaces — advertising luminaires, pole and bollard luminaires, smaller shops, smaller parking lots. Price €37.70, CRI 60–69.
  • 150W (12,500 lm): suitable for large spaces — supermarkets, sports halls, industrial halls, large parking lots, facades. Price €41.90, CRI 70–79 (better color rendering).

Important: The ballast must be sized for the exact wattage you are using — do not install a 70W bulb into a 150W ballast or vice versa. Measure the wattage of the existing bulb and choose a corresponding model, or replace the ballast as well when changing wattage.

Why is the luminous efficacy of this lamp lower than that of larger MH lamps?

It is a common phenomenon in HID lamps that higher power ratings produce more light per watt than lower ones. Therefore:

  • This 70W MH: 6,000 lm / 70W = 85.7 lm/W (advertised 66.6 lm/W, includes losses with ballast)
  • 150W MH: 12,500 lm / 150W = 83.3 lm/W
  • 250W+ MH: typically 90–100 lm/W

Reasons for this phenomenon:

  • In a gas discharge, higher power produces hotter plasma, which generates light more efficiently
  • Wall losses are proportionally greater in smaller lamps
  • Fixed losses in the ballast account for a proportionally larger share of the total energy in smaller lamps

If energy efficiency is important, consider an LED alternative — LEDs achieve 150–200+ lm/W at all power levels.

Can a metal-halide lamp be relit immediately after a power outage?

No. This is an important characteristic of HID lamps that differs from other lamp types:

  • A hot MH lamp cannot be restruck — the internal discharge pressure is too high, and the ignitor cannot start the discharge
  • Cool-down time typically 5–20 minutes — the lamp needs to cool down before restriking
  • Forced restriking can damage the lamp — do not attempt to force it

For this reason, HID lamps are best suited for spaces where lighting is on for long periods (e.g., advertising luminaires from sunset to sunrise, pole lighting in the early evening). Short on/off cycles are not suitable for MH lamps — in this case, an LED option is better.

If you need reliable restriking after power outages, consider an LED option — check out our selection in the LED industrial luminaires category.
