Compatibility and installation

What is a metal halide lamp?

A metal halide lamp (MH) is a gas-discharge lamp that produces extremely strong and uniform light by combining high-pressure mercury with metal halides. This gives the lamp:

  • High luminous efficacy — 12,500 lm from a single lamp
  • Neutral color temperature — 4200 K (natural white)
  • Moderate color rendering — CRI 70–79
  • Small physical size — only Ø22.5 × 100 mm produces 12,500 lm

External ballast and ignitor required

This lamp does not operate directly on mains voltage — it requires an external HID ballast and ignitor. Important notes:

  • The internal lamp voltage is 80–100 V, not the same as mains voltage (230 V)
  • The ballast must be rated for a 150W metal halide lamp
  • An ignitor is required to start the lamp
  • Installation requires the expertise of an electrician

Compatible ballasts can be found in the Electrical Supplies → Ballasts/Chokes category.

Ignition time and re-cooling

The behavior of HID lamps differs from LED and fluorescent lamps:

  • Ignition time to full power: approximately 1–4 minutes after switching on
  • Re-ignition after power outage: requires 5–20 minutes of cooling — a hot lamp cannot be reignited immediately
  • During lifetime: color temperature may shift slightly and light level may decrease (typical HID phenomenon)

For this reason, HID lamps are best suited for spaces where lighting is on for long periods and short on/off cycles are not required.

Typical applications

  • Retail lighting — clothing stores, jewelry shops, exhibition spaces
  • Outdoor advertising luminaires — large billboards, facades
  • Sports fields and indoor sports halls — general lighting
  • Parking areas and multi-story car parks — high floodlights
  • Lobbies and concert venues — event lighting
  • Industrial halls and warehouses — general lighting with high ceilings

LED alternative — a long-term investment

Metal halide lamps are being phased out of the market as LED technology develops. LED alternatives offer:

  • Longer lifespan (LED 50,000–100,000 h vs MH 6,000–15,000 h)
  • Lower energy consumption (LED 150–200 lm/W vs MH 83 lm/W)
  • Instant full power (no ignition time)
  • No cooling time for re-ignition

However, this Thorgeon metal halide lamp is suitable for maintaining existing HID systems and for applications where LED conversion is not yet possible. Also, explore our selection in the LED Industrial Lights category.

Safety notes

  • Use the lamp only in a suitable enclosed fixture — due to UV radiation, open installation can be dangerous
  • Do not touch a hot lamp
  • If the lamp breaks, proceed with caution — contains a small amount of mercury
  • At the end of its life, recycle according to the WEEE directive at a WEEE collection point

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the luminaire has a G12 base and is designed for a 150W metal halide lamp
  2. Check that an external HID ballast and ignitor are used (150W MH rating)
  3. Turn off power at the main switch
  4. Install the lamp — do not touch the glass with fingers (grease can cause a hot spot)
  5. Turn on the power
  6. Wait 1–4 minutes for full power to be achieved
  7. Check that the lamp glows steadily without flickering

What is a metal halide lamp and how does it differ from LED lamps?

  • Valotehokkuus: MH noin 80–100 lm/W, LED 150–200+ lm/W
  • Syttymisaika: MH vaatii 1–4 minuuttia täyteen tehoon, LED syttyy heti

Monimetallilamppujen vahvuus on erittäin korkea valoteho yhdestä pisteestä (12 500 lm tästä lampusta), mikä tekee niistä sopivi

Can I replace an old metal-halide lamp with this Thorgeon model?

Yes, as long as the base, wattage, and shape match the existing lamp. Check that:

  • The base is G12 — two-pin, not the same as E27 or other common base types
  • The wattage is 150 W — matches the rating of the existing ballast
  • The lamp designation is T6 — tube diameter 22.5 mm
  • The overall length is 100 mm — fits into the lamp holder

Use the new lamp with your existing HID ballast if it is rated for a 150W metal halide lamp. If the ballast is old or damaged, please contact our customer service — compatible ballasts can be found in the Electrical Supplies → Ballasts/Chokes category.

Why is the lamp's operating voltage 80–100 V and not 230 V?

The operating voltage of HID lamps differs from the mains voltage because the gas discharge operates at a different voltage than standard mains electricity. Details:

  • Internal lamp voltage (80–100 V) is the voltage at which the gas discharge occurs inside the lamp — this is the lamp's "operating voltage"
  • Mains voltage (230 V) comes from the mains supply from an electrical outlet
  • HID ballast converts the 230 V mains voltage to the internal lamp voltage of 80–100 V
  • Ignitor produces a high ignition voltage to initiate the gas discharge

In practice, this means that you never connect the lamp directly to the mains voltage — always through a ballast. This is why HID lamps require installation by an electrician.

Can a metal halide lamp be re-struck immediately after a power outage?

No. This is an important characteristic of HID lamps that differs from other lamp types:

  • A hot MH lamp cannot be re-ignited — the internal discharge pressure is too high, and the ignitor cannot start the discharge
  • Cool-down time typically 5–20 minutes — the lamp needs to cool down before re-ignition
  • Forced re-ignition can damage the lamp — do not attempt to force it

Due to this, HID lamps are best suited for spaces where lighting is on for long periods (e.g., shops during opening hours, sports halls during games, industrial halls during shifts). Short on/off cycles are not suitable for MH lamps — in such cases, an LED alternative is better.

If you need reliable re-ignition after power outages, consider an LED alternative — explore our selection in the LED Industrial Luminaires category.
