The 18W P45 halogen is among the dimmest E27 bulbs in our selection: its 205 lumens correspond roughly to an old 25W incandescent bulb. It is suitable as an ambient or night light, for wall lamps, and for small shades where full brightness would be too much. The clear glass leaves the filament visible, and the light reaches full intensity instantly.

Compatibility and installation

The P45 bulb is 45 mm in diameter and 72 mm in length, which is clearly smaller than a standard E27 bulb. It fits into small shades and glass covers where a standard bulb would not. The 240 V rating indicates the European voltage range, which works normally on Finland's 230 V mains.

Do not touch the glass of the halogen bulb with bare fingers – handle the bulb using a clean cloth.

  1. Check that the fixture has an E27 socket.
  2. Measure the available space in the shade: the bulb requires 45 x 72 mm.
  3. Turn off the power and let the old bulb cool down.
  4. Screw in the new bulb using a cloth.

How bright is an 18-watt halogen compared to an incandescent bulb?

205 lumens corresponds roughly to an old 25-watt incandescent bulb. The light is sufficient for mood lighting, as a night light, or for a small wall lamp, but not for tasks like reading or as the sole light source in a room.

If you need a bulb of the same size but brighter, choose the 28 W P45 model (370 lm) or the 42 W P45 model (625 lm).

Will a P45 bulb fit in my lamp?

P45 refers to a small, spherical bulb with a diameter of 45 mm. The total length of this bulb is 72 mm. A standard E27 bulb is 55–60 mm wide and about 100 mm long, so a P45 fits in most places where a standard bulb fits—as well as in many smaller shades.

Measure the distance between the base and the edge of the shade if the shade is very shallow or narrow.

Can a halogen lamp be dimmed?

Halogen lamps generally work with traditional dimmers, but the dimmability of this lamp is not explicitly stated in the product information.

Also, note the dimmer's minimum load: many modern dimmers require a load of, for example, 20–40 watts to operate steadily. A single 18-watt lamp may fall below this, which can cause the light to flicker. Check the minimum load in the dimmer's specifications.

Why choose halogen instead of an LED bulb?

A halogen is a good choice when you want a completely even light that resembles a filament, the bulb needs to work with an old dimmer, or the fixture gets so hot that LED electronics cannot withstand it. When dimmed, halogen light becomes warmer than most LED bulbs.
