Compatibility and installation

Superia class — for professional use

Sylvania's Superia series is a premium classification that stands out from the standard RefLED Retro collection with the following improvements:

  • Lifespan 25,000 h — 67% longer than standard Retro (15,000 h)
  • Switching cycles over 100,000 — double that of standard Retro (50,000)
  • 5-year warranty — longer than standard 2–3 year LED warranties
  • 3 color temperature variants (3000K, 4000K, 6500K) — the same lamp for all needs

This makes Superia an ideal choice for spaces where the lamp is in continuous or frequent use — hotels, restaurants, shops, offices, exhibition spaces, and industrial lighting.

MR16 size with 44 mm diameter

This lamp is a compact MR16 version — slightly smaller (44 mm) than the standard MR16 (51 mm), but maintains MR16 compatibility with its GU5.3 base. In practice, this means the lamp fits both:

  • Standard MR16 holders (51 mm socket)
  • Slightly smaller socket openings (44 mm)

This adds flexibility — the same lamp works in more luminaires.

4.6W vs 6W — when to choose which?

This 4.6W model replaces a 40W halogen, while the stronger 6W model replaces a 50W halogen. The choice depends on the situation:

  • This 4.6W: suitable when the luminaire was previously equipped with a 35–40W halogen, or when a slightly softer light is desired
  • 6W: suitable when the luminaire was previously equipped with a 50W halogen, or when a more powerful spotlight is needed

The advantage of the 4.6W model is a slightly lower price and energy consumption — over the long term, savings accumulate, even if the differences per lamp are small.

Requires a 12V transformer

This is a 12V low-voltage lamp that requires a 12V transformer to operate. It works with both magnetic and electronic transformers, but compatibility with electronic transformers depends on the exact model of the transformer. The most common compatible brands are Helvar, Tridonic, Osram, Ledvance, and Vossloh-Schwabe.

Compatible transformers can be found in the Electrical Supplies → Transformers category.

Check transformer power

The transformer's power must match the lamp's power (or the total power of multiple lamps). For a single 4.6W lamp, the transformer should be at least about 6W (allow a small reserve). For multiple lamps:

  • 5 lamps = 23W → transformer at least 30W
  • 10 lamps = 46W → transformer at least 55W
  • 20 lamps = 92W → transformer at least 110W

Glass body — premium quality that looks authentic

Unlike standard plastic LED lamps, this Sylvania RefLED Superia Retro has a full-glass body — the same material as traditional halogen lamps:

  • More uniform light distribution than plastic
  • No yellowing over time
  • Halogen-like appearance — blends seamlessly with traditional luminaires
  • Withstands higher temperatures than plastic

Replaces 40W GU5.3 halogen — 88% energy saving

This 4.6W LED produces the same light output as a traditional 40W GU5.3 halogen. Energy savings are approximately 88%, and the lifespan is:

  • 40W GU5.3 halogen: 2,000–4,000 h
  • This Sylvania Superia: 25,000 h — 6–12 times longer

In addition, over 100,000 switching cycles makes this an excellent option for luminaires that are frequently switched on and off — e.g., motion sensor lights, bathrooms, storage rooms, retail display lights.

This lamp is not dimmable

Do not install the lamp in a luminaire equipped with a dimmer. The lamp may flicker, stay on at full power, or be damaged.

36° beam angle — wide spotlight

The 36° beam angle of this lamp is in the flood category — a wide spotlight suitable for:

  • General lighting in small to medium-sized spaces
  • Ambient lighting in hotels, restaurants, and bars
  • Product display lighting in shops and exhibition spaces
  • Offices and meeting rooms
  • Smaller spotlights

Typical applications — professional use

  • Ambient lighting in hotels and restaurants
  • Product displays and exhibition spaces in shops
  • Offices and meeting rooms
  • Staff areas in museums and galleries
  • Modernization of older GU5.3 spotlights
  • Household decorative and accent lighting

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the luminaire has a GU5.3 base (not GU4 or GU10)
  2. Check that a 12V transformer is in use (magnetic or electronic)
  3. Check that the transformer's power is sufficient for the total lamp power
  4. Check that the luminaire dimensions (44 mm diameter, 50 mm length) are suitable
  5. Check that the luminaire does not have a dimmer
  6. Turn off the power before installation — do not touch the lamp glass with your fingers
  7. Install the lamp and turn on the power

What is the difference between the Sylvania RefLED Retro and RefLED Superia Retro series?

Superia is Sylvania's premium class, designed specifically for professional use. Key differences from the standard Retro series:

  • Lifespan: Superia 25,000 h vs Retro 15,000 h (67% longer)
  • Switching cycles: Superia over 100,000 vs Retro 50,000 (double)
  • Warranty: Superia 5 years vs Retro 3 years
  • Color temperature variants: Superia 3 (3000K/4000K/6500K) vs Retro 2 (3000K/4000K)

In practice, Superia lasts significantly longer and is suitable for spaces where the lamp is frequently switched on/off — e.g., motion sensor lights, hotels, restaurants, shops. Retro is more affordable and suitable for home use and locations where the lamp is used less frequently.

Should I choose the 4.6W or 6W Superia MR16?

The choice depends on how strong a light you need. Both models are of the same premium class (25,000 h, 5-year warranty), but they differ in light output:

  • This 4.6W (460–480 lm): replaces a 40W halogen — well-suited for general lighting, mood lighting, and applications where a softer light is desired
  • 6W (621 lm): replaces a 50W halogen — suitable for stronger accent lighting, retail displays, and task lighting

Measure the wattage of your existing halogen lamp — if it was 35–40W, choose the 4.6W. If it was 50W, choose the 6W. The price difference is small (€0.63), but the difference in light output is significant.

Is 4.6W sufficient to replace an old 40W halogen?

Yes. This 4.6W LED produces the same luminous flux (460–480 lm) as a traditional 40W GU5.3 halogen bulb — an energy saving of approximately 88%. Halogens convert a large part of their energy into heat, while LED bulbs produce more light with less energy.

In practice, you will notice the effects of the change:

  • Same light level: 460–480 lm corresponds to the light of a 40W halogen
  • Less heat: LED bulbs heat up significantly less than halogens
  • Longer lifespan: 25,000 h vs 2,000–4,000 h for halogens
  • Lower electricity bill: 88% less energy consumption

Note that the 3000K variant produces 460 lm, and the 4000K/6500K variants produce 480 lm. This is typical — warmer shades lose some efficiency compared to cooler ones.

Does this bulb work with an old magnetic transformer?

Yes. This Sylvania Superia works with both:

  • Magnetic transformers (traditional, heavier) — common in older luminaires
  • Electronic transformers — more modern technology, in almost all new luminaires

This is a big advantage compared to most LED bulbs, which require only an electronic transformer. However, please note that not all electronic transformers are necessarily fully compatible with LED bulbs — the most common compatible brands are Helvar, Tridonic, Osram, Ledvance, and Vossloh-Schwabe. If you have any doubts about compatibility, please contact our customer service.
