The Sylvania RefLED Superia Retro MR16 is Sylvania's premium-class LED MR16 designed for professional use, replacing the traditional 35W GU5.3 halogen lamp. This is the lowest power class in the Superia MR16 series—perfect for accent lighting, smaller spotlights, and applications where a softer light quality is desired. Available in four color temperature variants, including a very warm 2700K, which provides an incandescent-like ambiance. Its all-glass construction, 25,000-hour lifespan, and five-year warranty make it a reliable choice for professional use.

GU5.3 base. Operates on 12V AC/DC. Requires a transformer. Not dimmable.

Compatibility and installation

4 color temperature variants — for all uses

This is the only model in the Superia MR16 series that offers four different color temperature options, including the rare 2700K variant:

  • 2700K (warm, incandescent-like): household ambient lighting, restaurants, hotels, bars, vintage luminaires
  • 3000K (warm white): most common for ambient lighting — households, restaurants, cafes
  • 4000K (natural white): offices, workspaces, shops, display cases
  • 6500K (daylight): museums, gallery staff rooms, task lighting, photography workshops

The 2700K variant is particularly valuable because it is rare in LED spotlights — most manufacturers only offer 3000K and colder shades.

Superia class — for professional use

Sylvania's Superia series is a premium classification that stands out from the regular RefLED Retro range with the following improvements:

  • Lifespan 25,000 h — 67% longer than standard Retro (15,000 h)
  • Switching cycles over 100,000 — double that of standard Retro (50,000)
  • 5-year warranty — longer than standard 2–3 year LED warranties

This makes Superia an ideal choice for spaces where the lamp is in continuous or frequent use — hotels, restaurants, shops, offices, and exhibition spaces.

Superia MR16 series power levels — when to choose which?

Sylvania offers several power classes in the Superia MR16 series. The choice depends on the power of the old halogen lamp:

  • This 4.3W (345/380 lm): replaces 35W halogen — smaller accent lighting, precise spotlight
  • 4.6W (460/480 lm): replaces 40W halogen — general lighting, accent lighting
  • 6W (621 lm): replaces 50W halogen — powerful spotlight, shop displays

Measure the power of the old halogen lamp — choose the correct model based on that.

MR16 size with 44 mm diameter

This lamp is a compact MR16 version — slightly smaller (44 mm) than a standard MR16 (51 mm), but maintains MR16 compatibility with its GU5.3 base. Suitable for both standard MR16 holders and slightly smaller housing openings.

Requires 12V transformer

This is a 12V low-voltage lamp that requires a 12V transformer to operate. It works with both magnetic and electronic transformers, but compatibility with electronic transformers depends on the exact model of the transformer. The most common compatible brands are Helvar, Tridonic, Osram, Ledvance, and Vossloh-Schwabe.

Compatible transformers can be found in the Electrical supplies → Transformers category.

Check transformer power

The transformer's power must match the lamp (or the total power of multiple lamps). For one 4.3W lamp, the transformer should be a minimum of approximately 5W (allow a small reserve). For multiple lamps:

  • 5 lamps = 21.5W → transformer at least 25W
  • 10 lamps = 43W → transformer at least 50W
  • 20 lamps = 86W → transformer at least 100W

Glass body — premium quality that looks authentic

Unlike ordinary plastic LED lamps, this Sylvania RefLED Superia Retro has an all-glass body — the same material as traditional halogen lamps:

  • More even light distribution than plastic
  • No yellowing over time
  • Halogen-like appearance — seamlessly fits traditional luminaires
  • Withstands higher temperatures than plastic

Replaces 35W GU5.3 halogen — 88% energy savings

This 4.3W LED produces the same light output (345–380 lm) as a traditional 35W GU5.3 halogen. Energy savings are approximately 88%, and the lifespan is:

  • 35W GU5.3 halogen: 2,000–4,000 h
  • This Sylvania Superia: 25,000 h — 6–12 times longer

This lamp is not dimmable

Do not install the lamp in a luminaire equipped with a dimmer. The lamp may flicker, stay on at full power, or be damaged.

36° beam angle — wide spotlight

The 36° beam angle of this lamp is a flood type — a wide spotlight suitable for:

  • General lighting in small spaces
  • Accent lighting in hotels, restaurants, and bars
  • Product displays in shops and exhibition spaces
  • Display cases, jewelry stores, and smaller spotlights
  • Modernizing older GU5.3 spotlights

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the luminaire has a GU5.3 base (not GU4 or GU10)
  2. Check that a 12V transformer (magnetic or electronic) is used
  3. Check that the transformer's power is sufficient for the total power of the lamps
  4. Check that the luminaire's dimensions (44 mm diameter, 50 mm length) are suitable
  5. Check that the luminaire does not have a dimmer
  6. Turn off the power before installation — do not touch the lamp glass with your fingers
  7. Install the lamp and turn on the power

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

What is the difference between 2700K, 3000K, 4000K, and 6500K color temperatures?

Color temperature indicates the hue of light in Kelvin — the lower the number, the warmer the light:

  • 2700K (very warm): incandescent-like, for home use and ambient lighting. Suitable for restaurants, hotels, cafes, bars, and vintage light fixtures.
  • 3000K (warm white): most common for ambient lighting. Suitable for general household lighting, restaurants, and living rooms.
  • 4000K (natural white): neutral tone, suitable for offices, workspaces, furniture lighting, and kitchens.
  • 6500K (daylight): bright cool light, suitable for task lighting, museums, gallery staff areas, and photography studios.

The 2700K option is particularly valuable because it is rare in LED spotlights — most manufacturers only offer 3000K and cooler shades.

Is 4.3W sufficient to replace an old 35W halogen?

Yes. This 4.3W LED produces the same light output (345–380 lm) as a traditional 35W GU5.3 halogen bulb — an energy saving of approximately 88%. Halogens convert a large portion of energy into heat, while LED bulbs produce more light with less energy.

Please note that the lumen value depends on the color temperature variant:

  • 2700K and 3000K → 345 lm (slightly less, warmer shades lose efficiency in phosphor conversion)
  • 4000K and 6500K → 380 lm (full power, less phosphor conversion loss)

This is typical for LED bulbs. In practice, the difference is not significant — both variants replace a 35W halogen with sufficient light.

Should I choose 4.3W, 4.6W or 6W Superia MR16?

The choice depends on the wattage of your old halogen lamp and its intended use. All three models are in the same premium class (25,000 hrs, 5-year warranty) but differ in light output:

  • This 4.3W (345–380 lm): replaces a 35W halogen — smaller ambient lighting, precise spotlights. The only model with a 2700K option.
  • 4.6W (460–480 lm): replaces a 40W halogen — general lighting, spotlighting
  • 6W (621 lm): replaces a 50W halogen — powerful spotlight, retail displays

Measure the wattage of your existing halogen lamp and choose accordingly. If you want a very warm, incandescent-like light (2700K), this 4.3W model is the only option in the Superia range.

Does this bulb work with the old magnetic transformer?

Yes. This Sylvania Superia works with both:

  • Magnetic transformers (traditional, heavier ones) — common in old luminaires
  • Electronic transformers — more modern technology, found in almost all new luminaires

This is a big advantage compared to most LED lamps, which require only an electronic transformer. Please note, however, that not all electronic transformers may be fully compatible with LED lamps — the most common compatible brands are Helvar, Tridonic, Osram, Ledvance, and Vossloh-Schwabe. If you have any doubts about compatibility, please contact our customer service.
