The Sylvania RefLED Retro MR11 is a premium LED spotlight with a glass body construction that replaces traditional 35W GU5.3 halogen lamps. This is a special model — physically MR11 in size (35 mm diameter) but with a GU5.3 base, making it suitable for luminaires that have a GU5.3 holder but require a smaller lamp than the standard MR16. It operates on 12V low voltage with both magnetic and electronic transformers.

GU5.3 base, MR11 size (35 mm diameter). Works with 12V AC/DC. Requires a transformer. Not dimmable.

⚠ Order item

This product is an order item — delivery time is approximately 1 week from order. Availability can be checked in the shopping cart.

ℹ Special model — MR11 size with GU5.3 base

This is a rare combination — a physically MR11 sized lamp (35 mm diameter) but with a GU5.3 base (typically used in 51 mm MR16 lamps). Measure the diameter of your existing lamp before ordering to ensure suitability.

✓ 3-year warranty — premium quality

Sylvania provides a 3-year warranty for this product, which is significantly better than the 2-year warranty for ordinary LED lamps. The glass construction and 50,000 switching cycle durability support this promise.

Compatibility and installation

MR11 size with GU5.3 base — a unique combination

Most GU5.3 base spotlights have the following dimensions:

  • Standard MR16: 51 mm diameter, GU5.3 base — most common
  • This Sylvania special model: 35 mm diameter (MR11 size), GU5.3 base — rarer
  • Standard MR11: 35 mm diameter, GU4 base (4 mm pins) — different

This Sylvania model is suitable for luminaires where:

  • There is a GU5.3 base but the lamp housing is smaller than 51 mm
  • Specialty (e.g., US-imported) luminaires
  • Vintage and retro luminaires where a small lamp size is part of the aesthetic
  • Smaller spotlights and display cases

Check the lamp dimensions before ordering — measure the diameter of your existing halogen to ensure suitability.

Requires 12V transformer

This is a 12V low-voltage lamp that requires a 12V transformer to operate. This Sylvania model is compatible with both:

  • Magnetic transformers (traditional, heavier) — common in older luminaires
  • Electronic transformers — lightweight, more modern technology, in almost all new luminaires

Compatibility with electronic transformers depends on the exact transformer model — not all may work with this LED lamp. The most common compatible brands are Helvar, Tridonic, Osram, Ledvance, and Vossloh-Schwabe.

Compatible transformers can be found in the Electrical supplies → Transformers category.

Check transformer power

The transformer's power must match the lamp (or the combined power of multiple lamps). For one 4W lamp, the transformer should be at least about 5W (allow a small reserve). For multiple lamps:

  • 2 lamps = 8W → transformer at least 10W
  • 5 lamps = 20W → transformer at least 25W
  • 10 lamps = 40W → transformer at least 50W

Glass body — premium quality

Unlike ordinary plastic LED lamps, this Sylvania RefLED Retro has a full glass body — the same material as traditional halogen lamps:

  • More even light distribution than plastic
  • No yellowing over time
  • Halogen-like appearance — seamlessly fits into old luminaires
  • Withstands higher temperatures than plastic

Replaces 35W GU5.3 halogen — 89% energy saving

This 4W LED produces the same light output as a traditional 35W GU5.3 halogen. Energy saving is about 89%, and the lifespan is:

  • 35W GU5.3 halogen: 2,000–4,000 h
  • This Sylvania RefLED Retro: 15,000 h — 4–7 times longer

Additionally, 50,000 switching cycles makes this an excellent option for luminaires that are switched on and off frequently (e.g., motion sensor lights, bathrooms, storage rooms).

This lamp is not dimmable

Do not install the lamp in a luminaire equipped with a dimmer. The lamp may flicker, stay on at full power, or be damaged.

36° beam angle — wide spotlight

The 36° beam angle of this lamp is flood class — a wide spotlight suitable for:

  • General lighting in small spaces
  • Mood lighting in hotels, restaurants, and bars
  • Small spotlights and display case lights
  • Chandeliers and multi-lamp luminaires where MR11 size fits

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the luminaire has a GU5.3 base (not GU4 or GU10)
  2. Measure the diameter of the lamp housing — 35 mm space is needed (not a larger MR16 space)
  3. Check that a 12V transformer is in use (magnetic or electronic)
  4. Check that the transformer's power is sufficient for the total power of the lamps
  5. Check that the luminaire does not have a dimmer
  6. Turn off the power before installation — do not touch the lamp glass with your fingers
  7. Install the lamp and turn on the power

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

How does this MR11 bulb differ from a standard MR16?

This is a special Sylvania model that is physically smaller than a standard MR16 but uses the same GU5.3 base:

  • This Sylvania MR11 GU5.3: 35 mm diameter, GU5.3 base
  • Standard MR16: 51 mm diameter, GU5.3 base — most common
  • Standard MR11: 35 mm diameter, GU4 base (different base!)

This unusual combination (MR11 size + GU5.3 base) is suitable for luminaires that have a GU5.3 holder but the lamp housing is smaller than the standard 51 mm. Please check the diameter of your existing lamp before ordering.

Does this bulb work with an old magnetic transformer?

Yes. This Sylvania RefLED Retro is a rare LED that works with both:

  • Magnetic transformers (traditional, heavier) — common in old luminaires
  • Electronic transformers — more modern technology, in almost all new luminaires

This is a big advantage compared to most LED lamps, which require only an electronic transformer. Please note, however, that not all electronic transformers may be fully compatible with LED lamps — the most common compatible brands are Helvar, Tridonic, Osram, Ledvance, and Vossloh-Schwabe. If you have any doubts about compatibility, please contact our customer service.

Can I replace my old 35W GU5.3 halogen with this LED equivalent?

Yes, if the dimensions of the luminaire and the power of the transformer are suitable. This 4W LED produces the same light output (345 lm) as a traditional 35W GU5.3 halogen lamp — energy saving of approximately 89%. Please check that:

  • The lamp holder of the luminaire is approximately 35 mm in diameter (not larger than 51 mm)
  • A 12V transformer is used (magnetic or electronic)
  • The transformer's power is sufficient for the total power of the lamps
  • The luminaire does not have a dimmer — this LED is not dimmable

The lifespan is 15,000 h (vs 2,000–4,000 h for halogen) and switching cycles are 50,000 — a long-term investment.

What are switching cycles and why is 50,000 an important number?

Switching cycles indicate how many on/off cycles a lamp can withstand before it fails. This is an important metric for LED lamps because:

  • Standard LED: 15,000–20,000 cycles
  • Premium LED: 30,000–50,000 cycles
  • This Sylvania: 50,000 cycles — premium class
  • Halogen: 5,000–10,000 cycles — significantly less

50,000 cycles is enough for about 14 years if you switch the lamp on 10 times a day. This is especially important for fixtures that are frequently switched on and off — e.g., motion sensor lights, bathrooms, storage rooms, hallways, and entrances.
