Sylvania Daylightstar T8 is a traditional tri-phosphor fluorescent tube that produces daylight-like 5000K light. Popular in aquarium lighting, where the daylight spectrum supports both plant growth and the natural color rendition of fish. High luminous flux of 2300 lm and energy class A.

Suitable only for G13 bases in T8 fluorescent luminaires. Requires a ballast or electronic control gear.

Compatibility and installation

T8 G13 base — traditional fluorescent luminaire

This is a T8 fluorescent tube with a G13 base, which is the most common traditional fluorescent tube size. It fits directly into T8 luminaires that have either a traditional ballast + starter or an electronic control gear. The length of 895 mm corresponds to the standard 30W T8 fluorescent tube length.

Aquarium use — daylight 5000K

Daylightstar 5000K is a popular choice for aquarium lighting because its daylight-like spectrum:

  • Supports photosynthesis in aquatic plants
  • Produces natural color rendition for fish and the aquarium landscape
  • Maintains a clear, neutral tone of the water

Note for growers: although 5000K works well in a general aquarium, particularly demanding plants (e.g., red plants, CO2 aquariums) may benefit from investing in more specialized aquarium LED systems. This lamp is a good choice for providing consistent, neutral lighting.

Dimming — requires a compatible system

This Daylightstar is dimmable, but only with electronic dimmable control gear. A standard wall dimmer (such as a triac dimmer) does not work with fluorescent tubes.

Lifespan and operation-related information

The lifespan of a traditional fluorescent tube is typically 12,000–15,000 hours, which is shorter than LED alternatives. Frequent switching on and off shortens the lifespan — in aquarium use, where the lamp burns for long periods, the lifespan is typically longer.

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the luminaire is a T8 model with a G13 base
  2. Check that the length of 895 mm fits the luminaire
  3. Check the compatibility of the ballast or control gear in the luminaire with 30W power
  4. Install with power disconnected — turn the lamp into place
  5. For aquarium use: ensure that the lamp temperature does not affect the water temperature

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

Does this Daylightstar lamp fit all aquariums?
This 5000K daylight fluorescent tube is suitable for general aquariums where a neutral, daylight-like illumination is desired. It supports the growth of common aquatic plants and provides natural colour rendition for fish. For more demanding setups (e.g. CO₂-injected planted aquariums, reef aquariums), we recommend more specialized aquarium LED systems with a spectrum optimized for the specific application.
Can I replace an old T8 fluorescent tube with this Daylightstar?
Yes, if the old lamp was a T8 model with a G13 base and 30 W power. Check the lamp's length (895 mm) and ensure that the luminaire's choke or electronic ballast is compatible with 30W power. A color temperature of 5000K is a neutral daylight shade – if the old lamp was, for example, a warmer 4000K, the light output and shade in the space will change.
Is this lamp LED?
No. Sylvania Daylightstar is a traditional tri-phosphor T8 tube, not an LED. It contains mercury, requires a ballast or electronic control gear, and has a lifespan of approximately 12,000–15,000 hours. If you're looking for an LED alternative, check out Lumenled's selection of T8 LED tubes.
Why is this a discontinued product, and is there a replacement product available?
Sylvania has discontinued the Daylightstar model from its range, and the lamp is no longer manufactured. Currently, the last unit is available in our warehouse. As replacement products, we recommend either other 5000K T8 fluorescent tubes (if available), or, as a better solution, T8 LED tubes, which offer a longer lifespan and lower energy consumption. Please contact our customer service if you need help finding a suitable replacement product.
