Compatibility and installation

Requires an external ballast

Metal halide lamps do not operate directly on mains voltage — they require a separate ballast to regulate the electricity for proper lamp operation. Please check that your luminaire has a compatible CDM ballast before ordering. Compatible ballasts can be found in the Electrical Supplies → Ballasts/Chokes category.

GU6.5 base — check that it matches your luminaire

GU6.5 is a single-ended metal halide lamp base typically used in small accent lights and track lighting. Please check the lamp base marking before ordering — GU6.5 is not the same as GU10 or G6.35, even if it looks similar.

This lamp is not dimmable

Metal halide lamps cannot be dimmed with standard LED dimmers. The lamp requires a stable current to function correctly.

Operational safety

Metal halide lamps can become extremely hot during operation. Allow the lamp to cool for 10–15 minutes before touching it when replacing. Do not install the lamp in a damp or dusty environment without a suitable luminaire.

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the base is GU6.5 (not GU10 or G6.35)
  2. Check that the luminaire has a CDM-compatible ballast
  3. Check that the luminaire does not have a dimmer
  4. Check that the lamp dimensions (Ø12.5 × 56.2 mm) fit the luminaire
  5. For more complex installations, have a qualified electrician perform the installation

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

What are the best applications for Philips MasterColour Elite Mini CDM-Tm?
This premium metal halide lamp is designed for demanding accent lighting where color rendering and light quality are important. Typical applications include museums, exhibitions, high-end stores, hotels, restaurants, and aquarium lighting. Excellent color rendering (CRI 80–89) makes it a good choice when light needs to display colors naturally.
Can I directly replace a metal halide lamp with a halogen spotlight?
No. Metal halide lamps and halogen lamps require different connection solutions. This CDM lamp requires an external ballast, while halogen spotlights often operate directly on mains voltage or with a transformer. The replacement also requires checking the luminaire's connection technology — let an electrician do it.
How many watts does this CDM lamp correspond to in halogen?
A 20 W metal halide lamp is roughly equivalent in lighting efficiency to a 50 W halogen spotlight. The energy consumption savings are approximately 60%. In addition, a metal halide lamp has a significantly longer lifespan than a halogen lamp, which reduces both electricity consumption and replacement costs in professional use.
Why does a metal halide lamp require an external ballast?
Metal-halide lamps operate at an internal voltage of 90–100 V, which is lower than the mains voltage. A ballast (also known as a magnetic choke) regulates the current and voltage for the lamp and produces high-voltage pulses that initiate the gas discharge. Without a ballast, the lamp will not light up.
