The Philips IR heat lamp is a powerful 300 W infrared heat lamp, which is excellent for supplementary room heating and heating animals. The large R125 reflector shape directs the heat effectively forward, and the dimmability allows the heat output to be adjusted as needed. The E27 screw base makes installation easy — it fits most halogen spotlight fixtures and dedicated IR heat lamp fixtures.

Dimming to adjust heat output

Dimmability is a major advantage for an IR heat lamp — you can adjust the heat output according to the situation:

  • Full 300 W: quick heating, from cold conditions
  • 50 %: comfortable constant heat (approx. 150 W)
  • 20–30 %: maintenance heating

Requires a dimmer that supports halogen — check the compatibility of the dimmer device before installation.

Service life and maintenance

The service life of an IR heat lamp is typically 5,000 hours. The lamp does not need to be on constantly — use only as needed. A longer service life is achieved when the lamp is not switched on and off frequently in rapid succession.

Installation and safety

  • Only use the lamp in a fixture designed for an IR heat lamp
  • Maintain a safe distance from flammable materials (at least 50 cm)
  • Do not install near plastic or sensitive materials
  • Allow the lamp to cool completely before replacement (up to 30 min)
  • Do not touch with bare hands — finger grease can cause the glass to crack

Can I use this bulb in a standard household light fixture?

Limited availability. A 300 W IR heat lamp produces a great deal of heat, and most standard E27 fixtures cannot withstand it:

  • Plastic-housed fixtures may melt
  • Glass shades may crack
  • Fragile materials near the lamp may ignite

Only use the lamp in:

  • Fixtures designed for IR heat lamps
  • Freely hanging open ceramic sockets (with caution)
  • Specialized animal or industrial IR fixtures

Check the fixture's instruction manual for the maximum permitted wattage before installation.

What is R125 and how does it differ from R63?

The letter R refers to the reflector shape, and the number is the lamp's diameter in millimeters:

  • R125 (this one): Ø 125 mm — large IR heat lamp
  • R63: Ø 63 mm — small spotlight
  • R80: Ø 80 mm — medium-sized

R125 is significantly larger than standard household spotlights — this allows for high power (300 W) and efficient heat projection. Check your fixture to ensure the R125 size will fit — recessed household spotlights are usually not suitable.

Can I use the lamp outdoors?

Limited only — you need an outdoor-rated, IP-rated fixture. The lamp itself is not weatherproof — it requires a protective cover or canopy.

Typical outdoor applications:

  • Heating a porch or glazed terrace
  • Heating entrances in winter
  • Heating animal shelters (chicken coops, sheep pens)
  • Heating corner near an outdoor grill

Rain or snow hitting a hot lamp directly can cause the glass to crack. Always use with a cover or canopy protection.

Is this an energy-efficient option?

Energy efficiency depends on the intended use:

  • For heating: yes — the heat from an IR lamp goes directly to the target and is not wasted on heating the air. An electric radiator heats the entire room, while an IR lamp heats only the selected target.
  • For long-term heating: yes — the energy consumption per operating hour is often lower than heating the entire room
  • For lighting: no — an IR lamp primarily produces heat, with only about 20% as visible light

For targeted heating, IR is often a sensible solution — you can keep the room temperature at a normal level and heat only the bathroom in the morning or the entryway in the winter.
