The Philips HPL 4 PRO is a high-pressure mercury lamp designed for professional use, intended for the maintenance and replacement of old mercury lamp systems. With 80 W of power and 4000 lumens of consistent light, it is typically used in outdoor lighting, industrial lighting, and old streetlights.

High-pressure mercury lamps are an aging technology restricted by the EU. This lamp is primarily intended for the maintenance and replacement of existing mercury lamp systems. For new installations, LED or metal halide lamp alternatives are recommended due to better energy efficiency and color rendering.

Compatibility, Installation and Safety

Requires a ballast

High-pressure mercury lamps do not operate directly on mains voltage — they require an 80W mercury lamp ballast that regulates the current to suit the lamp and provides the starting voltage. Check that the luminaire has the correct mercury lamp ballast (not a metal halide or sodium lamp ballast).

E27 base — same as a traditional incandescent bulb

The HPL 4 PRO uses a standard E27 base, so it fits into luminaires whose holders are designed for E27 mercury lamps. Do not attempt to install this lamp in a regular E27 luminaire without a ballast — the lamp will not work and may be damaged.

Operational safety — contains mercury

This lamp contains small amounts of mercury. Handle the lamp carefully and recycle it properly along with fluorescent tubes and other mercury-containing products. If the lamp breaks, ventilate the area well and collect the fragments using protective gloves — do not use a vacuum cleaner.

Alternatives in the LED era

If you are upgrading your lighting system, consider the following alternatives:

  • Direct LED replacement: E27 LED lamp that does not require a ballast — requires ballast bypass by an electrician
  • Metal halide lamp: better color rendering and energy efficiency, but requires ballast replacement
  • LED luminaire replacement: new LED floodlight or outdoor luminaire, the best long-term solution

What is the Philips HPL 4 PRO 80W mercury lamp suitable for?
This high-pressure mercury lamp is primarily intended for the maintenance of old mercury lamp systems and as a replacement lamp. Typical applications include outdoor lighting (parks, parking lots, old street lights), industrial lighting, and warehouses. Color rendering is limited (CRI 40–59), so it is not suitable for indoor lighting where colors need to appear natural.
Can I install this mercury lamp in a standard E27 light fixture?
No. Even though the base is E27, a mercury lamp requires a separate ballast to function – a standard E27 light fixture does not include one. Only install the bulb in a fixture designed for an 80W high-pressure mercury lamp and that includes the correct ballast. If you want an E27 bulb for a standard light fixture, choose an LED or incandescent bulb.
Is this lamp safe — does it contain mercury?
An intact lamp is safe to use. The lamp contains small amounts of mercury, which remains inside the lamp and is not released during normal use. If the lamp breaks, ventilate the area well, collect the fragments with protective gloves (do not use a vacuum cleaner), and take them for recycling as mercury-containing waste. Spent lamps must always be recycled properly — not with household waste.
Is there an LED alternative that would replace this lamp?
Yes, several. The most direct replacement is an E27 LED lamp that does not require a ballast – however, this requires a qualified electrician to bypass the ballast in the fixture. In the long term, the best solution is often to replace the entire fixture with an LED model. The energy saving is significant – a comparable 4000lm LED lamp consumes about 30–35 W, whereas this mercury lamp consumes 80 W.
