HWL is a blended light lamp: it contains both a mercury discharge tube and an incandescent filament, which acts as a current limiter like a ballast. Therefore, the lamp does not require a separate ballast, unlike the HPL mercury lamp, but operates directly on a 230-volt mains supply. It is used in older hall, warehouse, yard, and industrial luminaires that previously used an HWL lamp or a high-wattage incandescent bulb.

Compatibility and installation

HWL and HPL lamps look the same, but they are not interchangeable. An HPL mercury lamp without a ballast will break immediately, and an HWL lamp in a fixture with a ballast will not function correctly. Therefore, check the marking on the old lamp and whether the luminaire has a ballast.

The lamp lights up first with the light from the filament and reaches full brightness in a few minutes. After being switched off, it will only relight once it has cooled down. The lamp contains mercury, so take the used lamp intact to a WEEE collection point.

  1. Check the old lamp for the marking HWL or ML and a power rating of 160 W.
  2. Ensure the luminaire does not have a ballast – if it does, choose an HPL lamp.
  3. Turn off the power and let the old lamp cool down properly.
  4. Screw the new lamp firmly into the socket and wait a few minutes for full light.

Any modifications to the luminaire's wiring should be performed by an electrician. See also mercury lamps and LED replacements for discharge lamps.

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

What is the difference between an HWL and an HPL lamp?

Both are mercury-based discharge lamps, but the HWL blended light lamp also contains an incandescent filament that limits current. Therefore, an HWL operates directly on mains power, whereas an HPL mercury lamp always requires a separate ballast.

The lamps are not interchangeable: an HPL will break immediately without a ballast, and an HWL will remain dim or fail to light in a fixture with a ballast. Check the label on the old lamp before ordering.

Does an HWL lamp require a ballast or an igniter?

Not necessary. The HWL blended light lamp’s own filament performs the same function as a ballast, so the lamp is connected directly to a 220–240 volt mains supply just like a regular incandescent bulb. A separate starter is not required either.

If your luminaire has a ballast, it is likely designed for an HPL mercury vapour lamp, and the HWL is not suitable for it.

Why doesn't the lamp reach full brightness immediately?

That is normal for a blended light lamp. When first switched on, the light is provided mainly by the filament, and the mercury discharge warms up to full power in a few minutes. At the same time, the light becomes brighter and whiter.

If the lamp goes out for a moment, for example due to a power cut, it will only switch back on after it has cooled down. This is not a fault.

Can an HWL lamp be replaced with an LED lamp?

It is often possible, and in the case of a mixed-light lamp, the replacement is easier than usual because the luminaire does not have a ballast that needs to be bypassed. A suitable E27-base LED lamp is screwed directly into its place. Check the lamp's size, weight, and suitability for the luminaire's thermal conditions.

An LED produces multiple times the light from the same amount of electricity. You can find the options in the LED lamps replacing discharge lamps category.
