B15d-base candle bulbs are needed for chandeliers, candelabras, and imported light fixtures where the base is not a standard E14. This clear B35 model is the brighter option in the series: 625 lumens corresponds to the light of a traditional 60-watt candle bulb, even though the power consumption is 42 watts. The clear glass leaves the filament visible, adding sparkle to crystal and glass.

Compatibility and installation

The B15d bulb is pushed into the base and turned a quarter turn. It does not fit an E14 screw base without an adapter. The dimensions 35 x 97 mm are standard size for a candle bulb.

The bulb becomes hot during use. Turn off the power and let the old bulb cool down before replacement. Handle the glass preferably with a clean cloth.

  1. Check your old bulb to see if it has two pins on the base (B15d) or screw threads (E14).
  2. Measure the free height of the lampshade: the bulb is 97 mm long.
  3. Check the maximum wattage allowed for the fixture.
  4. Switch off the power, push the new bulb into place, and turn a quarter turn.

Does 42 watts correspond to an old 60-watt candle bulb?

In terms of light output, yes. This bulb provides 625 lumens, which is roughly the same as a traditional 60-watt candle bulb, but the power is 42 watts. It is always best to compare in lumens, because watts only indicate power consumption. In practice, the light looks the same, but the consumption is about 30 percent lower.

What does B35 mean on a lamp label?

B35 describes the shape and size of the bulb: the letter B stands for the candle model and the number 35 for the bulb's diameter in millimeters. It is therefore unrelated to the base, even though this particular bulb also happens to have a B-prefix base, B15d. This marking is useful because it allows for comparing bulb sizes between different manufacturers.

How do I identify a B15d base on an old light bulb?

Look at the metal base of the lamp. The B15d base has smooth sides and two small protruding pins on opposite sides, and the base diameter is 15 mm. The E14 base, on the other hand, has threads around the base and no pins at all. The difference is immediately visible when you have the lamp in your hand.

Why is clear glass suitable for a crown?

In a clear bulb, the filament is visible, which means the light emanates from a small, sharp point. Crystal and glass parts refract such light strongly and create a sparkle, which is the whole point of a chandelier. A frosted bulb diffuses the light to be soft, causing the sparkle to be lost – it is a better choice when the light fixture does not have refractive parts.
