A 42W P45 halogen bulb provides 625 lumens, which is roughly equivalent to an old 60W incandescent bulb – but in a small, 45 mm globe size. It is suitable for wall and ceiling lamps, small domes, and glass shades where decent light is needed but a standard bulb will not fit. The clear glass leaves the filament visible and creates sparkle in, for example, glass and crystal shades.

Compatibility and installation

The 45 x 72 mm dimensions fit into most E27 fixtures and small domes as well. However, note the heat: 42 watts in a small glass bulb gets very hot, so the dome or shade must not touch the lamp. The 240 V rating works normally on Finland's 230 V network.

Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers – handle the bulb using a clean cloth.

  1. Check the maximum allowed wattage marked on the light fixture: at least 42 W.
  2. Ensure there is air space between the bulb and the dome.
  3. Turn off the power and let the old bulb cool down.
  4. Screw in the new bulb using a cloth.

Does a 42-watt halogen correspond to a 60-watt incandescent bulb?

In practice, yes. 625 lumens is slightly less than the approximately 700 lumens of a standard 60-watt incandescent bulb, but the difference is hard to notice with the naked eye, and the light tone is the same warm yellowish color.

At the same time, consumption drops by about a third, because a halogen produces the same amount of light with less power than a traditional incandescent bulb.

Is a 42-watt bulb suitable for a small lampshade?

In terms of size, yes, but heat must be taken into account. A small P45 bulb gets significantly hot at 42 watts, and in an enclosed fixture, the heat can damage the base, wiring, or plastic parts.

Check the luminaire's rating plate for the maximum permitted wattage. If the shade is enclosed or made of plastic and the rating is less than 42 W, choose a lower-wattage model.

What does a halogen light look like when dimmed?

Halogen light becomes warmer and more reddish when dimmed, much like a candle flame. Many people appreciate this, as it creates a peaceful atmosphere in the evening. In most LED lamps, the tone remains the same even as the light is dimmed.

The dimmability of this lamp is not explicitly stated in the product information, but halogens generally work with traditional dimmers. Check the power range of the dimmer before use.

Glossy or matte – which one should you choose?

Clear glass leaves the filament visible. It produces sharper shadows and creates sparkle in glass and crystal lampshades, making it suitable for fixtures where the bulb is part of the look.

Frosted glass diffuses light more evenly and prevents glare, making it better for open fixtures where the bulb is directly visible. This model is clear.
