The 700 W HPL mercury vapor lamp is designed for large spaces and outdoor areas: industrial halls, warehouses, sports field floodlights, and loading areas. It provides 42,000 lumens of neutral white 4000 K light and operates in a fixture equipped with a 700 W mercury vapor ballast. The lamp is intended for the maintenance and replacement of existing lighting fixtures.

Compatibility and installation

An HPL lamp always requires a ballast rated for the same wattage, in this case for a 700 W mercury vapor lamp. A separate igniter is not required, as the lamp ignites using its own auxiliary electrode. Never connect an HPL lamp directly to mains voltage without a ballast – the lamp will be destroyed immediately.

The lamp reaches full brightness in a few minutes and will only re-ignite after cooling down following power-off. Due to the low color rendering index, colors will appear distorted under this light, making it suitable for general and outdoor lighting. The lamp contains mercury: take the used lamp, intact, to an electrical and electronic waste collection point.

  1. Check the markings on the old lamp: HPL, HQL, or HSL and 700 W.
  2. Ensure that the fixture's ballast is designed for a 700 W mercury vapor lamp.
  3. Switch off the power and allow the old lamp to cool down properly.
  4. Screw the lamp firmly into the E40 base and wait a few minutes for full brightness.

Does 110–125 V mean that the bulb will not work on a 230-volt mains supply?

It does not. 110–125 V is the lamp's operating voltage, i.e., the voltage across the lamp while it is lit. The luminaire is normally connected to a 230-volt mains supply, and the ballast limits the lamp current to the correct level.

Therefore, the marking is not the same as the supply voltage for 110-volt incandescent bulbs. The most important thing is that the luminaire has a ballast for a 700 W mercury lamp. Without a ballast, the lamp will break immediately.

Does an HPL lamp require an igniter?

Not necessary. An HPL mercury vapor lamp ignites using an internal auxiliary electrode, so a ballast of the correct wattage and generally a compensation capacitor are sufficient for the luminaire.

If the luminaire has an igniter, it is likely designed for a sodium or metal halide lamp, and HPL is not the correct lamp for it. In that case, check the marking on the old lamp or ask us.

Can a sodium lamp be used to replace an HPL lamp?

Not directly. A high-pressure sodium lamp requires a different ballast and also an igniter, so the change requires modifying the luminaire's control gear. This work should be performed by an electrician.

Why does the lamp turn on slowly and not immediately again?

This is normal for a mercury-vapor lamp. After ignition, the lamp initially emits a dim, bluish light, and full brightness is reached in a few minutes as the mercury vaporizes.

A hot lamp will not reignite immediately, for example after a power outage, but must first cool down. Therefore, HPL is not suitable for applications where light must return instantly.
