The 250 W HPL mercury vapor lamp is one of the most common discharge lamps used in older outdoor, street, and pole luminaires, as well as in industrial halls and warehouses. It provides 12,700 lumens of neutral white 4000 K light and operates in luminaires equipped with a 250 W mercury vapor ballast. The average rated service life is 10,000 hours.

Compatibility and installation

An HPL lamp always requires a ballast rated for the same power, in this case, a 250 W mercury vapor ballast. A separate ignitor is not required. Never connect an HPL lamp directly to mains voltage without a ballast – the lamp will be destroyed instantly.

The lamp reaches full brightness in a few minutes and will only restrike after it has cooled down after being switched off. The lamp contains mercury: take the used lamp intact to an electrical and electronic waste collection point.

  1. Check the label on the old lamp: HPL, HQL, or HSL and 250 W.
  2. Ensure the luminaire ballast is designed for a 250 W mercury vapor lamp.
  3. Switch off the power and allow the old lamp to cool down thoroughly.
  4. Screw the lamp firmly into the E40 base and wait a few minutes for full light.

Ballast replacement and electrical connections must be performed by a professional electrician. Also see mercury vapor lamps, Patron HPL 700 W, and LED replacements for discharge lamps.

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

How do I identify that my light fixture requires a 250 W HPL lamp?

Check the old lamp: depending on the manufacturer, it will say HPL, HPL-N, HQL, or HSL, along with a power rating of 250 W. The base is a large E40 screw base. Another way is to check the label on the luminaire's ballast, which might say, for example, HQL 250 W or Hg 250 W.

If the lamp says SON, NAV, or HPS, it is a sodium lamp, and an HPL lamp will not fit the luminaire.

Does the lamp work with a sodium lamp ballast?

Not recommended. The ballast for a sodium lamp of the same wattage provides a different current to the lamp than a mercury-vapor lamp ballast, which can cause an HPL lamp to overheat, shorten its lifespan, or prevent it from starting properly. Furthermore, a sodium luminaire includes an igniter, which an HPL lamp does not require.

Always use a ballast designed for the specific lamp type and wattage. Replacing a ballast should be done by an electrician.

How long does an HPL lamp last?

The average rated life of the lamp is 10,000 hours. For an outdoor light that is on for about 12 hours a day, that means a little over two years.

The light output gradually diminishes even before the lamp burns out, so the lighting may be dim even while the lamp is still on. In locations with multiple lights, it is recommended to replace the lamps all at once.

Is it worth replacing the metal-halide lamp with an LED?

If a luminaire is on a lot, it is often worth it. HPL produces about 51 lumens per watt, while LED luminaires produce many times that with the same amount of electricity, and they have a longer service life.

There are two ways to switch: an E40-base LED replacement lamp, in which case the ballast is bypassed, or a completely new luminaire. Both require an electrician. You can find options in the category LED lamps replacing discharge lamps.
