The Osram Powerstar HQI-BT is a high-performance 400W metal halide lamp with an E40 base for industrial, warehouse, and sports lighting. It produces a luminous flux of 34,000 lumens with a daylight-style 5500K color temperature — suitable for applications where bright and natural light is required. Requires an external ballast (HID choke) and igniter.

Compatibility and installation

Applications: industrial halls, warehouses, sports halls, construction sites, large-area outdoor lighting. The high luminous flux and 5500K daylight color are suitable for locations requiring precise visual work or high light output over large areas.

Ballast: this lamp requires a separate HID ballast (magnetic choke or electronic HID-EVG) and an igniter. The lamp voltage is 115V, provided via the ballast. Never connect the lamp directly to 230V mains voltage.

Start-up time: the lamp reaches full power in approximately 2–4 minutes, and if the lamp is switched off, it requires 5–15 minutes to cool down before it can be re-ignited.

Installation checklist:

  1. Use only in HID-compatible luminaires with a 400W magnetic choke or electronic HID-EVG.
  2. Allow the lamp to cool completely before replacement — the operating temperature exceeds 300 °C.
  3. Do not touch the glass part of the lamp with bare hands — fingerprints can cause the glass to crack when heated.
  4. Always have the installation performed by a qualified electrician.

What is this lamp intended for?

The lamp is suitable for lighting industrial and sports halls as well as large warehouses and outdoor spaces. A luminous flux of 34,000 lm with a daylight-like 5500K color is sufficient to cover a large surface area, and a CRI of 80+ ensures good color rendering for work requiring precision.

Can the lamp be connected directly to 230V mains voltage?

No. The lamp voltage is 115V, and it requires a separate HID ballast (magnetic choke or electronic HID ballast) and an ignitor. Direct connection to 230V will destroy the lamp immediately. Use only in an HID-compatible luminaire.

Why doesn't the lamp turn back on immediately after switching off?

Metal halide lamps require 5–15 minutes to cool down before they can reignite. When hot, the arc-carrying metal vapor inside the lamp is so dense that reignition would require a peak voltage from the ballast. A cooled lamp ignites normally and reaches full power in 2–4 minutes.

Is an LED option available?

Yes. LED technology has almost completely replaced metal-halide lamps in new installations — the same luminous flux (34,000 lm) can be achieved with an LED high-bay luminaire at approximately 250–300 watts (vs. 400W + ballast losses). We recommend contacting our customer service to ask about an LED alternative if it is a new installation or a major renovation. As a replacement lamp, this Powerstar HQI-BT is suitable for sites where there is no desire to replace the existing luminaire.
