Osram LUMILUX® T8 is a premium traditional fluorescent tube that produces warm white 2700K light — a rarity in the T8 category, where most models are 3000K or colder. Its high color rendering index (CRI 80–89) makes it an excellent choice for general lighting in households and commercial spaces where an incandescent-like warm ambiance is desired. The 438 mm length is suitable for small fixture lights and spotlights.

T8 G13 base. Requires a ballast or electronic control gear. Contains mercury.

ℹ T8 Fluorescent Tubes — Transitioning to LED

The EU's EcoDesign directive restricts the sale of T8 fluorescent tubes for new installations. This product is available for maintenance of existing luminaires and replacement of old, burnt-out fluorescent tubes. If you wish to modernize the entire system, consider T8 LED tubes — energy savings of approximately 50% and a lifespan up to 4 times longer.

Compatibility and installation

T8 G13 base — compatibility with traditional luminaires

This is a T8 fluorescent tube with a G13 base, which is the most common traditional fluorescent tube size. It fits directly into T8 luminaires that have either a traditional ballast + starter or an electronic control gear (EVG / HF). The length of 438 mm corresponds to the standard length of a 15W T8 fluorescent tube.

2700K warm white — a rarity in the T8 category

This is one of the rarer 2700K T8 fluorescent tubes — the hue matches a traditional incandescent bulb and is especially suitable for ambient lighting and home use:

  • General household lighting — kitchen cabinet lights, bathroom downlights
  • Restaurants and cafes — warm atmospheric lighting
  • Hotels and accommodation facilities — cozy lighting in rooms
  • Older decorative luminaires — where a warm tone suits the aesthetic of the luminaire

If you want a colder white (e.g., 4000K or 6500K), please explore our selection in the T8 G13 Fluorescent Tubes category.

Premium LUMILUX® series — high color rendering

Osram's LUMILUX® series is a premium range of fluorescent tubes with a color rendering index (CRI) of 80–89 — significantly better than basic fluorescent tubes (CRI 40–59). In practice, this means colors appear more natural in the illuminated space, which is important, especially in households, restaurants, and areas where pleasant lighting is desired.

Requires a ballast or electronic control gear

A T8 fluorescent tube requires either a traditional ballast and starter or an electronic control gear (EVG / HF) to operate. Check the luminaire before purchase to see which system is in use — both are compatible with this fluorescent tube.

If needed, compatible control gear can be found in the Electrical Supplies → Control Gear/Ballasts category.

Contains mercury — recycling is important

Like all fluorescent tubes, this product contains a small amount of mercury, which is harmful to the environment. At the end of its lifespan, the fluorescent tube must be recycled in accordance with the WEEE directive:

  • Do not dispose of the fluorescent tube in general waste
  • Take the end-of-life tube to the nearest WEEE collection point (recycling centers, electrical supply stores, hardware stores)
  • Do not break the fluorescent tube during transport — mercury vapor is harmful to health

T8 vs T5 — do not confuse

A T8 fluorescent tube has a diameter of 26 mm and a G13 base. Do not confuse it with T5 fluorescent tubes, which are thinner (16 mm) and use a G5 base. These are not interchangeable.

EU EcoDesign Restrictions

The EU EcoDesign Directive 2019/2020 restricts the sale of T8 fluorescent tubes for new installations from August 25, 2023. This means:

  • Permitted: maintenance of existing luminaires, replacement of old burnt-out lamps
  • Recommended: modernization of systems to LED alternatives in the long term

If you want to modernize your luminaire to LED, check out our selection in the T8 LED tubes category — energy savings of approximately 50% and a lifespan up to 4 times longer.

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the luminaire is T8 G13-based (not T5 G5)
  2. Check that the lamp length of 438 mm fits the luminaire
  3. Check that the luminaire's ballast or control gear is compatible with 15W power
  4. Install with power disconnected — turn the lamp into place
  5. Turn on the power — the fluorescent tube will reach full brightness in about 30 seconds
  6. At the end of its life, recycle according to the WEEE directive

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

Is a 2700K fluorescent tube a rare product?

Yes. Most T8 fluorescent tubes have a colour temperature of 3000K, 4000K or 6500K — cooler shades suitable for general lighting in offices and industrial premises. 2700K (warm white) is considerably rarer in the T8 category because:

  • Warm white is mainly suitable for households and decorative lighting
  • Most T8 luminaires are used professionally, where a cooler shade is desired
  • The 2700K shade is mainly produced as a smaller special series

This Osram LUMILUX® 2700K fluorescent tube is a good choice for older household luminaires where a warm, incandescent-like ambiance is desired.

Is the sale of T8 fluorescent lamps banned in the EU?

Partially. The EU’s EcoDesign Directive 2019/2020 prohibited the sale of new T8 fluorescent tubes for new systems starting from 25.8.2023. This does not mean that all T8 fluorescent tubes have disappeared from the market:

  • Allowed: maintenance of existing luminaires — replacing old burnt-out fluorescent tubes
  • Allowed: sale from depleting stock
  • Prohibited: manufacturing and importing new T8 fluorescent tubes for new systems

In practice, this means you can still buy T8 fluorescent tubes for the maintenance of your old system, but in the long run, modernization to LED alternatives is recommended.

Can I replace this fluorescent tube with an LED equivalent?

Yes, and it is often sensible in the long run. The LED equivalent of this 15W T8 fluorescent tube would be approximately a 7–9W T8 LED tube (energy saving of about 50%). However, switching requires considering the fixture's ballast and starter:

  • EM-compatible T8 LED: works with old magnetic ballasts — the starter often needs to be replaced with an LED-compatible one
  • HF/ECG-compatible T8 LED: works with electronic ballasts — direct replacement without wiring changes
  • AC-compatible T8 LED: works directly with 230V mains voltage — requires rewiring by an electrician

Check the fixture's ballast and explore our selection in the T8 LED tubes category.

How do I recycle a used fluorescent tube?

Fluorescent tubes must not be disposed of with mixed waste — they contain a small amount of mercury, which is harmful to the environment. Recycling is carried out in accordance with the WEEE Directive (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment):

  • Take used fluorescent tubes to the nearest WEEE collection point (collection of electrical and electronic waste). These can be found at municipal recycling centers, electrical supply stores, and hardware stores.
  • Especially for professional use — property maintenance and electrical contracting companies often have their own fluorescent tube recycling agreements.
  • Do not break fluorescent tubes during transport — mercury vapor is harmful to health. Use the original packaging or a sturdy plastic bag.
