The Osram Halostar is a 12-volt G4 halogen lamp that provides warm 2900 Kelvin light for small low-voltage luminaires, such as spotlights and cabinet lights. The lamp operates on 12 volts and requires a suitable transformer to function. More energy-efficient LED alternatives are also available for the same G4 base.

Compatibility and installation

The lamp operates on 12 volts and requires a suitable transformer — do not connect it directly to the 230 V mains. If the luminaire does not have an existing transformer, please see our transformers and control gear.

Installation checklist:

  1. Ensure the luminaire has a G4 socket and a suitable 12 V transformer.
  2. Turn off the power and allow the old lamp to cool before replacing it.
  3. Do not touch the lamp glass with bare fingers — skin oils shorten the lifespan of a halogen lamp; use a cloth or gloves.
  4. Push the lamp pins straight into the socket and do not bend them.

Which bulb does this replace?

This is a 14W G4 halogen bulb (12V) that replaces a corresponding old G4 halogen. It provides 210 lumens of warm 2900K light and is suitable for small low-voltage fixtures, such as spotlights and cabinet lights.

Does the lamp need a transformer?

Yes. This is a 12-volt halogen lamp, so the fixture must have a suitable transformer. Do not connect the lamp directly to the 230 V mains. If your fixture does not have a built-in transformer, see our transformers and ballasts.

Is there an LED alternative for this?

Yes. There are also LED bulbs available for the same G4 base, which consume significantly less energy and last longer. Check the compatibility of the LED model with your transformer, as some old halogen transformers do not work reliably with low-power LED bulbs.

Is it okay to touch the light bulb glass during installation?

No. Do not touch the lamp glass with bare fingers. Skin oils leave a mark on the glass that heats up during use and shortens the life of the lamp. Handle the lamp with a clean cloth or wear gloves.
