The MR11 halogen spotlight is a small low-voltage lamp, especially suitable for small spotlights, chandeliers, display cases, and decorative lighting. With a diameter of only 35 mm and a beam angle of 30°, it produces a soft spotlight, and the warm 2800K tone is the natural color temperature of a classic halogen lamp — an authentic, warm white light that accentuates natural colors. The glass reflector provides bright and natural light distribution.

Requires a 12V transformer. GU4 base — not to be confused with GU5.3 (MR16) base.

Compatibility and Installation

Requires a 12V transformer

This is a 12V low-voltage lamp that requires a 12V transformer to operate. The transformer converts the household 230V mains voltage to 12V. Compatible transformers (both electronic and magnetic) can be found in our selection under Electrical Supplies → Transformers.

Check transformer wattage

The transformer's wattage must match the lamp (or the total wattage of multiple lamps). For example, for one 10W lamp, the transformer must be at least 10W. For multiple lamps, calculate the total wattage and choose a transformer accordingly — it's often wise to have a small reserve (e.g., four 10W lamps = 40W, choose a 50–60W transformer).

2800K — classic halogen tone

This lamp produces 2800K warm white light, which is the natural color temperature of a traditional halogen lamp. The tone is:

  • Slightly more neutral than 2700K (which is incandescent-like warm)
  • Slightly warmer than 3000K (which is a more neutral warm white)
  • Authentic halogen tone for a lamp burning at full power

Particularly suitable for situations where a natural warm ambiance is desired — households, restaurants, hotel spaces, display cases, and accent lighting.

MR11 vs MR16 — an important distinction

MR-type low-voltage spotlights are available in several sizes:

  • MR11 — diameter 35 mm, base GU4 (4 mm pins) — this product
  • MR16 — diameter 51 mm, base GU5.3 (5.3 mm pins) — larger alternative

These are not interchangeable — different bases and different sizes. Check the fixture's base and the lamp's size requirement before ordering.

Typical applications

  • Small spotlights and display case lighting
  • Chandeliers and decorative lighting where a small spotlight is needed
  • Exhibition lighting and illumination of artworks (in the background, not as a main subject due to prolonged exposure)
  • Hotel and restaurant premises
  • Old decorative luminaires where MR11 size is standard

Halogen lamp — usage considerations

A halogen lamp gets hot during use — do not touch the glass surface when the lamp is on or has just been turned off. The lifespan is typically 2,000–4,000 hours, which is significantly shorter than LED alternatives (15,000–25,000 h). However, halogen retains its advantages with perfect CRI 100 color rendering, which is ideal for professional use (artworks, jewelry, colorful products).

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the fixture has a GU4 base (not GU5.3)
  2. Check that a 12V transformer with sufficient power for the total wattage of the lamps is in use
  3. Check that the lamp dimensions (Ø35 × 35 mm) fit the fixture
  4. Turn off the power before installation — do not touch the lamp glass with your fingers (grease can shorten lifespan)
  5. Install the lamp and turn on the power

Consider LED alternative

If energy saving and longer lifespan are important, consider MR11 LED spotlights, which use about 80% less energy and last up to 25,000 hours. However, halogen retains its advantages with perfect CRI 100 color rendering, which is particularly important for illuminating artworks and jewelry.

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

What is the difference between 2700K and 2800K color temperatures?

The difference in color temperatures is very small but noticeable to the eye:

2700 K — a distinctly warm, incandescent-like yellow hue. Suitable for home and decorative lighting where a cozy atmosphere is desired.

2800 K — the natural hue of classic halogen. Slightly more neutral than 2700K, but still clearly warm white. Authentic halogen atmosphere.

In practice, you will distinguish them when the bulbs are lit side-by-side, but individually, both produce warm white light. Choose 2700K when you want a more incandescent-like atmosphere, and 2800K when you want a classic halogen hue.

What is the difference between MR11 and MR16 lamps?
MR bulbs are low-voltage spotlights, of which MR11 and MR16 are the most common: MR11 — diameter 35 mm, base GU4 (4 mm pins) — smaller model MR16 — diameter 51 mm, base GU5.3 (5.3 mm pins) — larger model They are not interchangeable — different base and different size. MR11 is needed for small light fixtures, MR16 for larger ones. Check the fixture's base and size class before ordering.
Does this lamp require a separate transformer?
Yes. An MR11 halogen lamp operates on 12V low voltage, so it requires a 12V transformer to be connected to a 230V mains voltage. The transformer can be either electronic or magnetic, and its power output must match the total power of all connected lamps. A 10W transformer is sufficient for one 10W lamp. You can find compatible transformers in the Transformers category.
Is it worth buying an LED instead of a halogen?

It depends on the intended use:

LED is better: if the priority is energy saving, long lifespan, and low electricity bills. MR11 LED consumes about 80% less energy and lasts 5–10 times longer (15,000–25,000 h vs. 2,000–4,000 h).

Halogen is better: if the priority is perfect color rendering (CRI 100). Halogen produces the most natural possible color, which is important for illuminating artworks, jewelry, and colorful products. Premium LEDs reach about Ra 90–95, not a perfect 100.

For general lighting, LED is almost always the better choice. For professional use (museums, gallery staff, jewelry stores), halogen retains its advantage in color rendering.
