The MR11 halogen spotlight is a small low-voltage lamp, especially suitable for small spotlights, chandeliers, display cases, and decorative lighting. Its diameter of only 35 mm and a 30° beam angle produce a soft spotlight, and the 2700K warm tone is suitable for ambient lighting in homes, restaurants, and exhibition lighting. The glass reflector provides bright and natural light distribution.

Requires a 12V transformer. GU4 base — not to be confused with GU5.3 (MR16) base.

Compatibility and Installation

Requires a 12V transformer

This is a 12V low-voltage lamp that requires a 12V transformer to operate. The transformer converts the household 230V mains voltage to 12V. Compatible transformers (both electronic and magnetic) can be found in our selection under the Electrical Supplies → Transformers category.

Check transformer power

The transformer's power must match the power of the lamp (or the total power of multiple lamps). For example, for a single 10W lamp, the transformer must be at least 10W. For multiple lamps, calculate the total power and choose a transformer accordingly — it's often advisable to allow for a small reserve (e.g., four 10W lamps = 40W, choose a 50–60W transformer).

MR11 vs MR16 — an important distinction

MR-type low-voltage floodlights are available in several sizes:

  • MR11 — diameter 35 mm, base GU4 (4 mm pins) — this product
  • MR16 — diameter 51 mm, base GU5.3 (5.3 mm pins) — larger alternative

These are not interchangeable — different base and different size. Check the luminaire's base and lamp size requirements before ordering.

Typical applications

  • Small spotlights and display case lights
  • Chandeliers and decorative luminaires requiring a small spotlight
  • Exhibition lighting and artwork illumination (in the background, not as the primary target due to prolonged exposure)
  • Hotel and restaurant premises
  • Old decorative luminaires where MR11 size is standard

Halogen lamp — usage considerations

Halogen lamps get hot during operation — do not touch the glass surface when the lamp is on or has just been switched off. The typical lifespan is 2,000–4,000 hours, which is significantly shorter than LED alternatives (15,000–25,000 h). However, halogen retains its advantages with a perfect CRI 100 color rendering, which is ideal for professional use (artworks, jewelry, colorful products).

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the luminaire has a GU4 base (not GU5.3)
  2. Check that a 12V transformer is used and that its power is sufficient for the total power of the lamps
  3. Check that the lamp's dimensions (Ø35 × 35 mm) fit the luminaire
  4. Turn off the power before installation — do not touch the lamp's glass with your fingers (grease can shorten its lifespan)
  5. Install the lamp and turn on the power

Consider an LED alternative

If energy saving and longer lifespan are important, consider MR11 LED spotlights, which use about 80% less energy and last up to 25,000 hours. However, halogen retains its advantages with a perfect CRI 100 color rendering, which is particularly important for illuminating artworks and jewelry.

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

What is the difference between MR11 and MR16 bulbs?
MR lamps are low-voltage spotlights, with MR11 and MR16 being the most common: MR11 — 35 mm diameter, GU4 base (4 mm pins) — smaller model MR16 — 51 mm diameter, GU5.3 base (5.3 mm pins) — larger model They are not interchangeable — different base and different size. MR11 is needed for small luminaires, MR16 for larger ones. Check the luminaire's base and size before ordering.
Does this lamp require a separate transformer?
Yes. An MR11 halogen lamp operates on 12V low voltage, so it requires a 12V transformer to connect to a 230V mains voltage. The transformer can be either electronic or magnetic, and its power must match the total power of all connected lamps. A 10W transformer is sufficient for a single 10W lamp; for multiple lamps, sum up their total power. You can find compatible transformers in the Transformers category.
Is it worth buying an LED instead of a halogen?

It depends on the intended use:

LED is better: if energy saving, long lifespan, and low electricity bills are priorities. MR11 LEDs consume about 80% less energy and last 5-10 times longer (15,000-25,000 h vs. 2,000-4,000 h).

Halogen is better: if perfect color rendering (CRI 100) is a priority. Halogen produces the most natural color possible, which is important for lighting artworks, jewelry, and colorful products. Premium LEDs achieve about Ra 90-95, not a perfect 100.

For general lighting, LED is almost always the better choice. For professional use (museums, gallery staff, jewelry stores), halogen retains an advantage in color rendering.

Can this bulb be used as a replacement for previous halogen bulbs?
Yes, if the old bulb was an MR11 GU4 12V model and 10W or similar. The current transformer usually fits directly, as long as its power is sufficient. Check the bulb's dimensions (Ø35 × 35 mm) and that the base is GU4 (not GU5.3). If the old bulb is larger (e.g., MR16 51 mm diameter), this MR11 will not fit — you'll need an MR16 model.
