The G12 metal halide lamp is an efficient lamp based on discharge technology, used for professional and industrial lighting. A power of 70 W achieves 6500 lm of light — significantly more than a halogen or old fluorescent lamp at the same power. The 3000 K color temperature provides a warm white tone, and the 360° light distribution spreads light in every direction. The UV-protected bulb ensures safe use in locations where the lighting is close to the objects being illuminated.
Requires a separate ballast. 85 V lamp voltage — NOT for direct 230 V mains voltage. G12 base. Installation by a qualified electrician.

Compatibility and installation
Ballast required — no direct mains connection
The metal halide lamp does NOT work directly on 230 V mains voltage. The lamp requires a separate ballast that:
- Regulates the lamp's starting and operating voltage (the lamp operates at 85 V)
- Provides a high starting voltage to ignite the lamp
- Stabilizes the current during operation
The ballast can be magnetic (older, traditional choke + igniter) or electronic (modern HID driver — better control, less flickering). Check your luminaire's ballast before purchasing. An electrician will take care of choosing the correct type.

Startup and shutdown time
A special feature of the metal halide lamp is its slow startup and shutdown:
- Startup to full brightness: 1–4 minutes (from cold)
- Restart after a short shutdown: 5–10 minutes waiting time
This limits the use of the lamp — it is not suitable for locations where light is needed immediately or where the lamp is switched on/off frequently. It is well-suited for locations where the light is on for the entire duration of opening hours or a work shift.
UV protection
A metal halide lamp inherently produces a significant amount of UV radiation. The UV-protected bulb filters out harmful UV. This is especially important in environments where people are close to the light or materials that can fade. Never use a metal halide lamp without a luminaire equipped with protective glass — even a UV-protected lamp requires a protective cover in the luminaire.
Service life
The typical service life of a metal halide lamp is 6,000–10,000 hours — significantly more than halogen but less than LED. For long-term use, LED is often a more reasonable long-term solution.
