R50 Eco is an energy-saving halogen spotlight that replaces a traditional 60 W incandescent spotlight. With 42 W of power, it achieves 375 lm of light and a 30° beam angle — suitable especially for spot lighting: kitchen worktops, decorative objects, and details. Based on the small E14 screw base and the R-reflector shape, this model is a traditional and reliable solution for spot lighting.

R-reflector shape (R50), focused 30° beam. E14 small Edison base. 220 V mains voltage. UV-protected.

Compatibility and installation

R50 — R-reflector shape

The R letter in the lamp name refers to the reflector shape. R50 means a diameter of Ø 50 mm. The R-reflector shape:

  • Directs light forward in a clearly defined beam
  • Prevents light from scattering to the sides
  • Suitable for spot lighting and accent lighting

R50 30° is a narrow beam — focused on individual objects. For wider lighting, one would use an R50 60° or R63 (wider reflector model).

Eco — energy saving compared to 60W

"Eco" means that the lamp produces the same luminous flux (375 lm) with lower power (42 W) than a traditional 60 W spotlight. The energy saving is approximately 30%. An LED alternative would achieve the same amount of light with even lower power (approx. 5–6 W).

UV protection is important for decorative objects

A halogen lamp naturally produces UV radiation, which fades surface paints, fabrics, and other colored materials. The UV-protected model contains a special coating that filters out harmful UV light. This is important for:

  • Lighting artworks
  • Lighting fine furniture
  • Store and exhibition lighting
  • Children's rooms and bedrooms

E14 vs E27

E14 is a smaller version of the Edison screw — the base has a thread diameter of 14 mm (E27 is 27 mm). Common in decorative and spot lamps, where the small base size allows for refined design.

Lifespan — typical for halogen

The lifespan of a halogen spotlight is typically 2000 hours. Keep a spare lamp handy, as there are often multiple spotlights and they are easy to replace.

Installation checklist

  1. Turn off the power from the main switch
  2. Let the old lamp cool down completely
  3. Do not touch the bulb with bare hands — finger oils damage the glass and shorten the lifespan
  4. Use a clean cloth or glove
  5. Unscrew the old lamp from the E14 base
  6. Install the new lamp — turn clockwise
  7. Turn on the power and test
Power: 42W

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

What is the difference between R50 and MR16 lamps?

Both are reflector lamps, but they differ:

  • R50 (this one): 230 V mains voltage, E14 base, built-in mirrored interior surface. Fits directly into household light fixtures without a transformer.
  • MR16: 12 V low voltage, GU5.3 base, multifaceted reflector surface. Requires a transformer.

In practice:

  • Older household spotlight installation → likely R50 or R63
  • More modern spotlight (e.g., track lighting) → likely MR16 or GU10

Check the base size of the old lamp before purchasing.

Can I replace a 60 W R50 with this 42 W Eco model?

Yes — the same luminous flux (375 lm), the same shape and base. The Eco model produces the same light output with lower power consumption:

  • Traditional R50 60 W: approx. 375 lm, consumption 60 W
  • R50 Eco 42 W (this one): 375 lm, consumption 42 W

Energy savings of approximately 30%. The service life and light quality are the same — it is essentially an improved halogen technology where the same amount of light is achieved with lower power consumption.

Is an LED alternative available in the R50 format?

Yes, LED R50 lamps are widely available. The benefits of switching to LED:

  • Energy savings: 42 W → approx. 5–6 W
  • Service life: 2,000 h → 15,000–25,000 h
  • No UV: LEDs do not produce any UV radiation, so fading is not an issue

Check the beam angle of the LED R50 model — most are 36° (slightly wider than the halogen's 30°), so the spotlight concentration is not exactly the same. If a very narrow beam is needed, a halogen might be better. For general spotlighting, the LED R50 is the better choice.

Is it suitable for dimmable circuits?

Yes — halogen lamps are fully dimmable using standard halogen dimmers. This is one reason why halogen is still used alongside LED technology:

  • Smooth dimming: halogen dims smoothly from 1–100%
  • No flickering: works without issues for ambient lighting
  • Color temperature shift: the light becomes warmer when dimmed — this is a pleasant feature for ambient lighting

If you are planning to switch to LED and use dimmers, ensure that the new LED lamps are dimmable and that the dimmer switch supports LEDs. Old halogen dimmers do not always work optimally with LED lamps.
