The Philips Halo Caps CL is a compact 12 V halogen lamp with a clear bulb. With a power of 35 W, the lamp produces 766 lm of light and is suitable for oven lights, special applications, and uses where the warm light of a halogen is desired. The GY6.35 base and small dimensions (Ø 11 × 44 mm) fit most GY6.35 luminaires.

12 V halogen — requires a 12V transformer. GY6.35 base. Clear bulb — the individual filament is visible. Typical short halogen lifespan.

Compatibility and installation

12 V — transformer required

This is a 12 V halogen lamp that does not operate directly on 230 V mains voltage. A 12 V transformer is always required. Most oven lights and special luminaires already have a built-in transformer — check your luminaire before purchasing. See our selection in the transformers category if you need a separate transformer.

GY6.35 base

GY6.35 is a two-pin lamp base with a pin spacing of 6.35 mm. This is the most common base in oven lights and special applications. Check your luminaire or device before purchasing to ensure that GY6.35 is the correct base — some luminaires have G4 (4 mm pin spacing) or G9 (9 mm).

Clear (CL) vs frosted (M) model

This is a clear (CL) model, where the lamp bulb is transparent and the filament is visible. The clear model produces a slightly sharper and brighter light, but can cause glare if the lamp is exposed. In some applications, a frosted model provides a softer light.

Applications

  • Oven lights (if the oven requires a GY6.35 base)
  • Special luminaires (e.g., microscopes, projectors)
  • Lighting for small areas where the warm light of a halogen is desired

Lifespan — typical for halogen

The lifespan of halogen lamps is typically 1000–2000 hours, which is significantly shorter than LED lamps. This is a good thing to note — be prepared for replacements and consider an LED alternative if available for your application.

Installation checklist

  1. Turn off the power at the main switch
  2. Allow the lamp to cool completely (halogen gets very hot)
  3. Do not touch the bulb with bare hands — oils from fingers can damage the glass
  4. Use a clean cloth or glove for installation
  5. Insert the new lamp
  6. Turn on the power and test
Power: 35W

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

Why do Philips Halo Caps need a 12V transformer?

Halo Caps are designed for 12 V low voltage, not directly for 230 V mains voltage. This is typical for halogen lamps used in special applications — their small size and lower operating voltage make them safer in damp or confined spaces.

Most oven lights already include a built-in transformer, so changing the bulb is straightforward. You only need a separate transformer if you are building your own lighting assembly. Explore our selection in the transformers category.

Can a Halo Caps halogen be replaced with an LED bulb?

LED alternatives with the same GY6.35 base are available, but carefully check compatibility before replacing:

  • Operating temperature: If it's an oven light, most LEDs cannot withstand the high temperatures of an oven. In that case, use a specific oven bulb (see oven bulb 50W)
  • Dimensions: Check that the LED fits in the same space
  • Transformer compatibility: Old halogen transformers do not always work with LED bulbs — an LED driver may be needed

For special applications (microscopes, projectors), halogen may still be the best choice as it produces a full light spectrum distribution.

Why shouldn't you touch the glass part of a halogen lamp with bare hands?

The glass of a halogen lamp gets extremely hot during use (over 200 °C). If grease from your fingers (natural skin oil) gets onto the glass surface, it will burn onto it and:

  • Weaken the glass — the heat will not be distributed evenly, which can cause the glass to break.
  • Shorten its lifespan — localised heating puts stress on the filament.

When changing the bulb, use a clean cloth or gloves. If fingerprints have appeared on the glass, carefully wipe it with alcohol or a cleaning solution before installation. This applies to all halogen lamps, not just this model.

What's the difference between the clear (CL) and frosted models?

The transparency of the bulb's globe affects the quality of light:

  • Clear (CL, this model): transparent glass, filament visible. Produces a slightly sharper and brighter light. May cause glare if the bulb is exposed.
  • Frosted (M or Matt): soft light, filament not visible. Suitable for applications where the bulb's appearance is important or glare is an issue.

In oven lamps, the globe is usually covered by a protective shield, so clear vs. frosted does not affect the practical light output. For special applications, it is advisable to consider the choice according to the intended use.
