This is a traditional MR11 halogen spotlight lamp, used to replace broken MR11 halogens in luminaires. Featuring 12 V halogen technology, 20 W power, and a 30° beam angle—it's suitable for older MR11 luminaires where LED alternatives don't work (e.g., compatibility issues with transformers or dimmers). The 2800 K colour temperature produces a warm and familiar halogen tone.

12 V halogen—requires a 12V transformer. GU4 base (MR11). The lifespan is typical for halogen (approx. 2000 h), significantly shorter than LEDs.

Compatibility and installation

When to stick with halogen?

MR11 LED alternatives are available, but compatibility issues are common—especially with old halogen transformers and dimmers, LEDs can flicker or fail to light up. Halogen lamps always work with these components, making them a safe choice as a replacement when you don't want to modify an existing luminaire.

12 V — transformer required

MR11 always operates at 12 V voltage and never directly on 230 V mains voltage. Most MR11 luminaires already have a built-in transformer. If you are building your own lighting setup, check our selection in the transformers category.

GU4 base — two pins

GU4 is a two-pin base with a pin spacing of 4 mm. This is the standard base for MR11 lamps. Check the luminaire before purchasing to ensure GU4 is the correct base—larger spotlights often use GU5.3 (MR16 version) or GU10 (direct 230 V).

MR11 vs MR16

  • MR11 (this, Ø 35 mm): smaller, suitable for compact luminaires (display cases, furniture lighting, small spotlights)
  • MR16 (Ø 50 mm): larger, more common, suitable for most recesses and spotlights

Check the luminaire dimensions before purchasing.

Beam angle 30°

30° is a narrow spotlight beam angle that precisely concentrates light on a defined area. Especially suitable for accentuating artwork, objects, or work surfaces.

Lifespan — typical for halogen

The lifespan of a halogen lamp is typically 2000 hours—significantly shorter than an LED lamp (25,000+ h). Be prepared for replacements and consider an LED switch if the luminaire and transformer allow it.

Installation checklist

  1. Turn off the power at the main switch
  2. Allow the old lamp to cool completely
  3. Do not touch the bulb with bare hands—finger grease damages the glass
  4. Use a clean cloth or glove
  5. Install the new lamp—two pins into the slots
  6. Turn on the power and test
Power: 20W

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

What's the difference between MR11 and MR16 bulbs?

The abbreviation MR stands for Multifaceted Reflector, and the number indicates the lamp's diameter in eighth-inch units:

  • MR11 (this): diameter 11/8 inches = 35 mm. Small, suitable for compact luminaires.
  • MR16: diameter 16/8 inches = 50 mm. More common, suitable for most recessed and spot lights.

The lamps are not interchangeable — the luminaire is designed for either an MR11 or MR16 sized lamp. Check the luminaire's dimensions and base (MR11 = GU4, MR16 = GU5.3) before purchasing.

Why are MR11 halogens still needed when LEDs exist?

LED-MR11 lamps are available, but compatibility issues with old systems are common:

  • Halogen transformers: produce AC voltage, which is not always suitable for LEDs — may cause flickering
  • Old dimmers: do not work optimally with LED loads
  • Low load: an LED lamp consumes so little power that an old transformer may not function correctly

A halogen lamp always connects to an old system without problems. This makes halogen a good choice when only the bulb has broken and the entire lighting system is not to be replaced. In the long term, it is advisable to consider upgrading the entire system to be LED-compatible.

What does a 30° opening angle mean?

The beam angle describes how wide an area the lamp illuminates:

  • 30° (this lamp): narrow spotlight beam angle — suitable for accent lighting of objects and artworks, where light is desired to be concentrated on a precisely defined area
  • 36–40°: standard spotlight beam angle
  • 60° and wider: suitable for wider spotlighting or general lighting

30° is a good choice for display cases, pictures, or lighting individual objects. If you are lighting a larger area (e.g., a dining table or worktop), choose a wider angle.

Why shouldn't you touch a halogen bulb's glass with bare hands?

The glass of a halogen lamp gets extremely hot during use (over 200 °C). If finger grease adheres to the glass surface during installation, it will burn on and:

  • Weaken the glass — localized heating can cause the glass to crack
  • Shorten the lifespan — uneven heating strains the filament

When changing the lamp, use a clean cloth or gloves. If fingerprints appear on the glass, gently wipe it with alcohol before installation. This applies to all halogen lamps.
