GY6.35 is a small two-pin base used in spotlights, desk lamps, display cases, and many appliances. The lamp operates at 12 volts, meaning it does not connect directly to mains voltage but requires a transformer. Despite its small size, 50 watts provides 450 lumens of sharp, warm light – which is why this base is popular for spotlighting.

Compatibility and installation

The lamp requires a 12-volt supply. If the light fixture already has a GY6.35 lamp, a transformer almost certainly exists – it may be inside the fixture or in a separate housing. The transformer's power rating must be sufficient for a 50-watt load.

Do not touch the glass with bare fingers. Insert the lamp using a clean cloth or gloves.

  1. Check that the old lamp's base has two thin pins spaced approximately 6.35 mm apart.
  2. Verify the transformer's voltage (12 V) and power rating.
  3. Switch off the power and let the old lamp cool down.
  4. Push the new lamp directly into the base while handling it through a cloth.

You can find transformers in the Transformers category and LED alternatives in the GY6.35 LED lamps category. Wiring work should be performed by a qualified electrician.

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

Does a GY6.35 lamp require a transformer?

Yes. The lamp operates on 12 volts and cannot be connected directly to a 230-volt mains supply. In practice, the transformer is already present in the luminaire or device where the lamp was installed – either inside the housing or as a separate unit. If you are building a new system, ensure that the transformer's power rating is sufficient for a 50-watt load.

How does the GY6.35 base differ from the G4 base?

Both are two-pin 12-volt miniature bases, but the pin spacing is different: approximately 4 mm for G4 and approximately 6.35 mm for GY6.35. Therefore, the lamps are not interchangeable. The easiest way to check the measurement is with a ruler on the old lamp or by comparing the pin spacing to the marking on the base.

Where are 12-volt GY6.35 bulbs used?

Typical applications include spotlights, exhibition and retail display cases, task lights, microscopes, and other devices where a compact yet bright light source is needed. The small body allows for precise optics, which is why the base has remained in use even in specialized equipment.

Can I replace it with an LED bulb?

GY6.35 base LED lamps are available, and they consume a fraction of 50 watts. However, one thing must be checked: the old electronic transformer is often rated for a high load and may not work reliably with a low-power LED. See the LED options in our GY6.35 LED lamps category and ask for help with choosing a transformer if needed.
