The Osram LED Star GX53 is a low-profile LED lamp that replaces the traditional 40W GX53 bulb. With only 4.9 W of power and 470 lumens of warm white 2700K light at a 120° beam angle — it's an ideal choice for cabinet lights, downlights, shelf lights, and kitchen countertop lighting. It operates directly on 230V mains voltage without a separate transformer.

Compatibility and installation

GX53 base — bayonet mount

GX53 is a bayonet-mount lamp base where two pins are inserted into the luminaire's holder and the lamp is rotated approximately a quarter turn to lock it. Easy and quick to install — no tools or separate installation parts required.

Operates on 230V mains voltage

This Osram LED Star lamp connects directly to household mains voltage — no separate transformer is needed. Installation is simple: twist the lamp into place and turn on the power.

Especially suitable for furniture lighting

The low-profile design (only 28 mm high) makes the GX53 lamp an excellent choice for thin luminaires and furniture installations:

  • Kitchen countertop lighting and under-cabinet lights
  • Display case lights and exhibition lights
  • Shelf lights in wardrobes and bookshelves
  • Entrance lights and hallway lights
  • Marker lights for stairs and passageways

This lamp is not dimmable

Do not install the lamp in a luminaire equipped with a dimmer. The lamp may flicker, stay on at full power, or be damaged. If you need a dimmable GX53 LED, check our selection for separately marked dimmable versions.

Outdoor use only in suitable luminaires

This lamp has an IP20 protection class, meaning it is designed for indoor use. Outdoor use is possible only in luminaires whose own enclosure provides sufficient protection against moisture and dust (IP44 or better).

What is a GX53 base and how does it differ from other lamp bases?
The GX53 is a bayonet cap fitting with two pins on the lamp base that are inserted into the openings of the light fixture's holder. The lamp is then rotated about a quarter turn to lock it into place. The GX53 is specifically designed for low-profile LED lamps used in cabinet lighting, under-cabinet lighting, and display case lighting. It should not be confused with the GU10 (also a bayonet fitting, but with different pin dimensions) or the E27 (screw fitting).
Does this LED bulb directly replace an old 40W GX53 bulb?
Yes. This 4.9W LED is equivalent in lighting efficiency to a traditional 40W GX53 bulb, and it operates directly on 230V mains voltage without a transformer. The energy saving is approximately 88%, and the lifespan is up to 15,000 hours. The lamp's dimensions (Ø75 × 28 mm) are standard GX53 size, so it fits all GX53 luminaires.
Which applications are best suited for GX53 LED lamps?

Can this lamp be used outdoors?
This bulb has an IP20 protection rating, meaning it is designed for indoor use. Outdoor use is only possible in luminaires where the luminaire's own enclosure provides sufficient protection against moisture and dust (IP44 or higher). For example, a protected porch light or canopy light may contain an IP20 bulb, provided the luminaire itself is IP-rated suitable for outdoor use.
