Most GU5.3 spotlights are 12-volt models, but some spotlights, display cases, and special systems operate on 24 volts. This MR16 halogen is designed specifically for a 24-volt supply: its 20-watt output and 38-degree beam provide a soft, warm spotlight for shelves, paintings, and counters. The lamp lights up to full brightness instantly and renders colors naturally.

Voltage notice: this lamp is a 24-volt model. In a standard 12-volt halogen transformer, it will glow very dimly, and it must not be connected directly to a 230-volt mains supply.

Compatibility and installation

The base and size are the same as a standard MR16 spotlight, so the lamp will physically fit into any GU5.3 socket. The deciding factor is the output voltage of the transformer: it must be 24 V. Check the voltage on the side of the transformer (marked Output or SEC) or on your old lamp.

Do not touch the glass of the halogen lamp with bare fingers – handle the lamp using a clean cloth.

  1. Check the voltage marking on the old lamp: 24 V.
  2. Verify the transformer's output voltage and ensure 20 W is within its power range.
  3. Switch off the power and let the old lamp cool down.
  4. Push the pins of the new lamp directly into the socket through a cloth.

Dimmability is not specified in the product data. Transformer replacement and electrical connections should be performed by an electrician. See also GU5.3 halogen lamps and transformers.

Does a 24-volt bulb work with a 12-volt transformer?

Not properly. In a 12-volt transformer, a 24-volt bulb receives only half of its rated voltage, causing it to burn dimly and with a reddish hue. The bulb will not break, but it will not provide enough light.

The other way around, the situation is more dangerous: a 12-volt bulb in a 24-volt system will burn out almost immediately. Therefore, always check the voltage rating of the old bulb and the transformer before ordering.

How do I know if my lamp is 12 or 24 volts?

The easiest way is to check the old bulb: the voltage is marked on the base of the bulb or the edge of the reflector, for example 24V 20W. Another way is to check the transformer's rating plate, where the output voltage is marked with the word Output or SEC.

If no markings can be found, take a picture of the old bulb and the transformer and send it to our customer service, and we will help you identify the correct model.

Can this be replaced with an LED bulb?

In principle yes, but the vast majority of GU5.3 LED lamps are made for 12 volts, so a 24 V LED model is specifically required for a 24-volt system. In addition, an electronic halogen transformer often requires a certain minimum load, which a small LED lamp may not be sufficient to meet – this can result in flickering.

What does a 38-degree beam mean in practice?

38 degrees is a so-called wide beam angle. At a distance of two meters, the beam creates an illuminated area approximately 1.4 meters wide, so the light is sufficient for evenly lighting a shelf, painting, or counter.

If you want to highlight a single object more sharply, a narrower 10–24 degree beam is more suitable. A wider beam, on the other hand, is suitable as general lighting for a low space.
