This is a red MR11 halogen spotlight for special applications. 12 V halogen technology, 35 W power, and a 30° beam angle — suitable for environments where a red spotlight is desired: restaurants, exhibitions, party venues, bars, photography studios, and interior details. A 2800 K color temperature and a red filter produce warm red light.

12 V halogen — requires a 12V transformer. GU4 base (MR11). Red spotlight — does not replace white general lighting. Short halogen lifespan.

Compatibility and usage

Designed for special use

Red light is not suitable for general lighting — this is designed specifically for special applications where a red tone is desired. Typical use cases:

  • Restaurants and bars (mood lighting)
  • Exhibitions and museums (highlighting objects)
  • Party venues and theaters
  • Photography studios
  • Lighting interior details
  • Darkened rooms — e.g., workspaces for astronomy enthusiasts

12 V — transformer required

MR11 always operates at 12 V voltage. Most MR11 fixtures already have a built-in transformer. If you are building your own lighting setup, explore our selection in the transformers category.

GU4 base — two-pin 4 mm

GU4 is the standard base for MR11 lamps. Check the fixture before purchase to ensure GU4 is the correct base — larger spotlights often use GU5.3 (MR16) or GU10 (direct 230 V).

LED alternative

Red LED MR11 lamps are available, but compatibility with old halogen transformers can be problematic. A halogen lamp always works reliably. Sister models in our selection — standard 20W MR11 white, same dimensions and base.

Lifespan — typical for halogen

The lifespan of a halogen lamp is typically 2,000 hours. In special use — e.g., restaurant evening lighting — the actual usage time often remains at a few hours a day, so one lamp lasts for several years.

Installation checklist

  1. Turn off the power from the main switch
  2. Let the old lamp cool down completely
  3. Do not touch the bulb with bare hands — finger oils will damage the glass
  4. Use a clean cloth or glove
  5. Install the new lamp — two pins into the slots
  6. Turn on the power and test
Power: 35W

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

Why a red halogen light instead of a red LED?

Red LED MR11 bulbs are available, but there are good reasons to choose halogen:

  • Tone: the red light produced by halogen is typically deeper and warmer than LED red, which can be somewhat more technical
  • Compatibility: older halogen transformers and dimmers do not always work optimally with LED bulbs
  • Dimming: halogen dims smoothly, whereas LED may flicker at low levels
  • Cost: halogen is cheaper at the time of purchase

If you are building a new system and energy saving is important, choose LED. For supplementing an existing halogen system, halogen is the natural choice.

What is red light used for?

Red light has many specific uses:

  • Astronomy: red light does not interfere with the eye's dark adaptation (night observations)
  • Darkrooms: photography darkrooms and theater/exhibition areas
  • Mood lighting: restaurants, bars, event venues — red creates an intimate atmosphere
  • Accent lighting: artworks and exhibits where a dramatic effect is desired
  • Night light: in hallways — red does not disrupt sleep patterns as much as white

Red light is not suitable for general illumination or for tasks requiring accurate color rendering.

What is the difference between MR11 and MR16 bulbs?

The abbreviation MR stands for Multifaceted Reflector, and the number indicates the diameter in eighths of an inch:

  • MR11 (this one): diameter 11/8 inches = 35 mm, base GU4
  • MR16: diameter 16/8 inches = 50 mm, base GU5.3

The lamps are not interchangeable — the fixture is designed for either an MR11 or an MR16 sized lamp, and the bases are different (GU4 vs GU5.3). Check your fixture's dimensions and base before purchasing.

Can a red MR11 be dimmed?

In principle yes — a halogen lamp can be dimmed just like a regular halogen. However, check your system:

  • Dimmer type: a standard halogen dimmer is suitable
  • Transformer type: electronic transformers do not always work for dimming — electromagnetic ones work more reliably

Dimming reduces the brightness of the red light — this may be desirable for mood lighting or astronomical use. Start testing with a smaller load to ensure compatibility.
